Ridgefield was founded on November 8, 1777 by Captain John Smith and his men as a farmstead on what is now Maplewood Road. The original village had only 10 houses and no water supply; however, it quickly grew into a sleepy farming community with a population of 350 people by 1800. After America's independence from Great Britain was declared, many Ridgefield residents followed President George Washington to Philadelphia to take up arms against the British Empire. Many of these early settlers were noted for their bravery and leadership in the war (such as Captain John Smith himself). In 1824, Ridgefield became one of twelve townships within Middlesex County when it was created from parts of Bergen Township and East Brunswick Township. In 1828, Ridgefield annexed portions of Hackensack Township and Northbridge Township to form its own township; this annexation made Ridgefield one of the most populous municipalities in Middlesex County at that time (at its peak there were 1,200 people living in RidgeFIELD). During World War II many workers from nearby Camden filled high-paying jobs at several local factories while others took refuge in ridgefields homes until they could find permanent housing elsewhere after V-E Day; some even married those who lived hereabouts. Afterward many civilian jobs opened up throughout New Jersey due to post-war boom times which continue to this day with businesses expanding rapidly across all sectors including real estate development throughout much of Northeast NJ.—Jay Hirschfeld

Ridgefield was founded in 1777 by the Reverend Abraham Ridge and his wife, Sarah. The town was named after a ridge in New York that ran along the border of the town. It quickly became a center for trade and commerce, with a large market and two stores. In 1812, Ridgefield incorporated as a city. The city's first mayor was Elijah Howe. Other early mayors included Amos Dickson, Ezekiel Chandler, and John Goodwin. In 1835, Ridgefield became part of the new United States of America and joined the rest of New Jersey in becoming an American state. The city's population increased rapidly during this period; by 1840, it had reached 100,000 people. During World War II, Ridgefield played an important role in the Battle of Atlantic City (1944). During the 1960s and 1970s, Ridgefield underwent significant redevelopment efforts which have now made it one of NJ's most popular tourist destinations. These include the construction of several high-rise apartment buildings as well as major shopping malls including The Mall at Ridgefield Park and White Sands Mall. Today, Ridgefield is home to many successful businesses such as Essex County government headquarters (the former Home Insurance Building), GW Pharmaceuticals Inc., Sunoco Logistics Inc., Verizon Communications Headquarters (now known as Prudential Financial Tower), among others.
Ridgefield is a borough in New Jersey, United States. Ridgefield was formed on April 14, 1871, from portions of the former Township of Bridgewater. The borough borders Princeton Junction to the east and Middlesex County to the west.
