It took several years for this machine to be perfected, but it eventually became popular among children and adults alike because it was easy to operate and very effective at shooting small targets. In 1892, Captain John Thompson began marketing what he called the " BB gun." This firearmfired round balls filled with lead that could be shot at someone or something using a bow and arrow. Aftermarket companies soon produced similar devices that differed in size, shape, and color so that people could customize their own versions of the firearm. The popularity of BB guns declined during World War II because many families decided not to arm themselves because they felt it would contravene Social Security laws. Ridgefield became a national holiday in 1950 and has been celebrated annually since that time with parades and other events. Ridgefield is a town in Essex County, New Jersey, United States. The population was 24,859 at the 2010 census. Ridgefield is the borough's principal settlement and most populous area. It is part of the Newark–Trenton, NJ-PA Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first settler in Ridgefield was Nicholas Kieffer in 1795. In 1810, John Dorney and his brother Andrew founded the village of Easton on a parcel of land grant from King George III. Ridgefield, Kiefferstown and nearby West Manchester were all chartered towns within Essex County on November 10, 1814 by Governor Nicholas Biddle as "Ridgefield Township", with a vote of 3 to 1 in support. On February 11, 1824, Ridgefield became an official municipality when it ratified a resolution that had been passed by the township meeting two days earlier establishing a municipal government separate from that of Easton which still functioned as an unincorporated community. In 1907–08 work began on what would become known as "the Great Bridge" across the Delaware River connecting Ridgefield with Trenton; this project was completed in 1908 and marked the beginning of what would be called "The Age of Railroads". On October 15th 1909 there was an Earthquake measuring 6.3 On October 26th 1917 another Quake measured 7.0 resulting in widespread damage throughout eastern New Jersey including parts of Ridgefield
