The name Ridgefield was given to the area by Colonel James Dunmore and his brother-in-law, General John Nicholson. Ridgefield is located in southern Monmouth County on the Raritan River. The Township of Ridgefield was organized on February 14, 1764 from part of Middlesex Township. The borough was established on November 3, 1876 from portions of Ridgewood Township and West Deptford Township. On July 1, 1981, Ridgefield Borough became an independent municipality with its own government and elected officials. In 2009, Borough Council eliminated both township and borough status for themselves and merged with East Brunswick Township to form a single municipality with a population of over 140,000 people

The first Europeans to visit what is now Ridgefield Park were Dutch explorers in 1624 who named it "Willemstadt" after their captain Willem de Vlaminck. In 1764, his son-in-law Sir George Washington visiting New Netherland discovered land including present-day Ridgefield Park and made a gift of it to General John Forbes as part of the Treaty of Paris which ended the Seven Years' War between Great Britain and France. The grant made Ridgefield Park part of New Jersey.
In 1810, President James K. Polk sent an army under General Winthrop Scott overland to invade Florida during the Mexican–American War; when news arrived back home that Scott had been killed in action near Vera Cruz, Mexico on October 8, 1810 (the date commemorated as American Independence Day), America's shortest war ever began - with general mortally wounded by a Mexican shot while leading his cavalry into battle against Pancho Villa's forces at Monterrey on September 26, 1847 - Americans began celebrating all week long as they honored Scott's memory with such activities as drinking roast beef dinners at home and driving around in open carriages wearing “Hernando” hats or “Don Carlos’s Volunteers” uniforms inspired by Scott's life story. By 1840 there were about 350 people living in Ridgefield Park according to US censuses; other towns within Morris County included Hackensack (population 10,000) and Oradell (population 25,000). According to one source: "RidgeFIELD PARK has always been primarily agricultural... but commercial interests have gradually become more important." But most significant arrival may have been Polish refugees fleeing Russian occupation of Poland during World Wars I & II.
