It is part of the Newark-Haret community and is located on the border of Glassboro and Brick Township. The Ridgefield Park shopping center (estimated to have over $100 million in annual sales) anchors the western edge of town. The Hackensack River flows through the town and forms its eastern boundary. Ridgefield Park was founded by Germans who arrived in 1777 as part of an American army invading New Jersey from Pennsylvania. They named their new settlement after Mount Hermon in Bryansk province, Russia. The name "Ridgefield" comes from a tree that grew near where they first settled: "The Ridgefield oak became so tall that it blocked out all light from neighboring farms." In 1837, Ridgefield acquired land east of the river for what would become downtown ridgefield park. In 1869, it annexeded Glassboro Township which made Ridgefield Park one municipality with a total population of over 60,000 residents within its borders.

Ridgefield Park is a borough in New Jersey, United States. The population was 24,811 as of the 2010 census. It is situated on the border of Middlesex and Mercer counties. Ridgefield was formed from portions of two other towns – Sayreville and Montclair – in 1874. The name "Ridgefield" seems to be derived from the ridge running along the banks of the Delaware River where it meets Township Line Road (now Routes 9 and 25). The first Europeans to visit what is now Ridgefield Park were Frenchmen led by Nicolas-Jacques Conte in 1764. They named the area after Mount Tabor, located about twenty miles to their west in Pennsylvania. John Rutherford had arrived in North America less than two years earlier with his family and soon developed land atpresenting at Ridgefield Heights (later Old Bridge) on which he built a summer home known as Rutherford's Bluff House. He also erected a small log gristmill on what is now Main Street near its junction with Township Line Road (now Route 9). That mill was known as Griggs Mill until 1827 when it became part of Arthur Thomas' frame works company Limited which later became Morris & Essex Mills Company Ltd., one of America's leading manufacturers of textile products through World War I until its sale to Bethlehem Steel Corporation in 1935. In 1874, Sayreville residents James Dolan and his wife Anna decided to move from Sayreville, NJ towards center county because they felt that Montgomery County offered more opportunities for education and advancement than did Jersey County. In June 1875 they leased 4,000 acres (2 km²) east of their original town site from George Wirtz who had purchased it from Nicholas de la Rochefort for $150 per acre ($2,500/km²). Mr. Dolan laid out streetscape features such as driveways and sidewalks while Mrs. Dolan supervised farm activities including planting crops that would provide food for their household during winter months when necessary roads were not open due to snow or ice conditions; however no houses were built until about 1888 according to records kept by Assistant State Highway Commissioner Harry Sweeny prior to his retirement in 1957: Many people who resided within these limits before 1888 may have left or been forced out by events related directly or indirectly to railroad construction projects--mentioned earlier--such as development around South Monmouth Junction Railroad Station adjacent property line; this included most notably --the erection by DeWolfe Bros., builders of Americancia Dairy products plant near Somerville; also some workers (~200 men), hired locally for military purposes supplying milk for troops living nearby Fort Monmouth on Long Island Sound--were displaced either forcibly or involuntarily during large build-out period preceding open field operation begun Dec 1st 1870." The bridge over Dog Valley Creek marks the original Meridian road connection between Ridgefield Park proper (now parts of Edison Avenue, Livingston Avenue, etc.) and Sayreville - now Montclair - which began operations on November 7th 1870 under contract with Colonel Augustus Biddle Sr.. A new road connecting RidgefieldPark with Burlington via Cedar Cliff Drive opened up following construction supervision by Governor Alfred Ewing beginning on February 17th 1871 although services continued uninterrupted throughout December 1870 Presumably this latter section became fully connected only after December 15th when all but one lane closed due to heavy rains caused flooding within Dog Valley creek corridor.- Original Dog Valley Rd bridge still stands today across creek
