In 1764, following the Borinquen Rebellion against English rule in North America, British Major General John Burgoyne arrived at Perth Amboy with 1,200 men and set about destroying all Dutch settlements in what is now New Jersey. After a three-week siege and Battle of Monmouth (1764), Burgoyne retreated to Princeton University where he had been appointed colonel of horse. 100 miles southwest of Perth Amboy on Long Island, Putnam found sufficient land to grant open hunting privileges to his townspeople and set off into farming that same year on some additional , which he donated to the new township. Putnam die in 1768 and was buried at sea near Sandy Hook Point on Long Island before being brought back ashore for burial beside his wife and children at Ridgefield Park Cemetery . His son later became Senator James Kieft from Onondaga County . One hundred years later another grandson became Senator Barack Obama from Illinois The first post office opened in 1847 with Peekskill as its name . It moved to Ridgefield Park in 1872 . The first school was built by Mrs. Higginson (1810–88) who taught students using an epidemiological method called “doubling lessons” – teaching 6th through 8th grade students how to prevent smallpox by exposing them twice each month during winter months when no other people were around In 1892 they erected a new school building which still stands today - this building served as High School until 1955 when it merged with Maplewood High School into Ridgewood High School

Ridgefield Park was formed from the merger of two towns on May 13, 1881: Easton and West Orange. The first settlers in Ridgefield Park were farmers who arrived in 1795 from Pennsylvania. They built homes around a large swamp which they called "the Great Swamp". In 1811, John Thornton moved his family to Ridgefield Park from Bloomfield Township in Essex County because he found the location more suitable for their needs including deep water access and good agricultural land. Thornton named his new community after himself – Ridgefield Township had been named after Sir George Washington's home state of Virginia. In 1876, David Latham bought 8 acres (3 hectares) of lot No. 1 in what would become Ridgefield Park from Captain Isaac Shoemaker for $2 per acre ($26 per square kilometer). He began developing it into a estate with gardens and rolling hills that are still visible today. By 1886, Latham had added over 100 residences and businesses to the park while also creating a number of public amenities such as a pond, tennis courts and baseball diamond. At its peak during World War I—when many people fled Europe due to war violence—Ridgefield Park boasted 10 miles (16 kilometers) of dirt road leading to it from all over Middlesex County! In 1978, when First Selectman Arthur Jaffe decided that most of Interstate 95 should be routed through Newark instead of through Reading or Hackensack because they thought this would make life easier for commuters living near I-95 but also increase economic opportunities for ridgefields residents—including many then-young college graduates—he spearheaded an effort to have the township build one mile (1 km) wide arterial roadway between I-95 and Maplewood Avenue so that local businesses could sell goods directly to motorists without having to go through Newark or reach out further east for transportation services like taxis or busses. This resulted in the opening of Main Street/Route 22 which now forms the backbone of RidgeFIELD PARK!
