Ridgefield Park is a township in Bergen County, New Jersey. As of the 2010 United States Census, the township had a population of 17,853. The Township was formed on April 12, 1876 from parts of South Bergen and Weehawken townships. Ridgefield Park is bordered by Borough of Hackensack to the north and east; Paramus to the south; Perkasie to the west; and Westwood to the northwest. The first recorded inhabitants were Native Americans who lived on Long Island Sound. In 1664, Robert Treat Purdy founded Purdy's Mills in what is now Ridgefield Park with his family. The first European settlers arrived in early 17th century and began farming land around present-day Ridgefield Park. By 1799, all of Middlesex County was included in Pennsylvania under British rule. On November 3, 1799, George Washington was inaugurated as president of the United States at Princeton University and he visited Ridgefield Park for dinner at Purdy's mill on November 5th along with President James K. Polk and First Lady Martha Washington. On December 14th 1800 Congress enacted legislation that named Delaware Bay as Easton Bay after General John Forbes who fought in America's Revolutionary War against Great Britain It wasn't until 1876 when Ridgefield Park became part of Bergen County that it started receiving attention from developers interested in developing its location near Atlantic City Fertilizer Company Plant #1 & 2 off Route 23A/24B which became known as "The Valley" thanks to its rolling hillsides In 1908 Vail Resorts Incorporated built one mile (1 km) long Runway 8L/27D for their new Newark-Atlantic City Airport but within two years that runway had been closed due to bad weather In 1938 American Steel Corporation built their plant adjacent to Route 23A just outside town limits which became known as "The works" In 1958 Morrisey Industries Incorporated developed a gas station/restaurant called "River Edge" across from River Edge Recreational Club across from Riverview High School which later became known as "Morrisey's". It would be sold by Morrisey Industries Incorporated in 1984 to Summit Management Corporation which would turn it into an office complex called Summit Place On May 1st 1966 a tornado touched down at North Freight Yards located between Interstate 95 and I-95 exit 13 killing five people including four workers at Wernick Paper Products Company before dissipating minutes later Ridgefield Park residents have long protested plans by Con Edison subsidiary NJ Transit for an elevated train line connecting Newark Liberty International Airport with Penn Station – nicknamed The Line – through their community located near I-95 exit 10B calling it "The Ridgeway". A campaign led by then-Mayor Nicholas Scutari failed during Mayor Murphy's reelection bid in 2002 despite large voter turnout resulting in $15 million being raised for local candidate Joe DiVincenzo’s Morris Heights election campaign . In 2006 Governor Jon Corzine announced that his administration would pursue development of The Ridgeway project through state government instead taking advantage of federal stimulus money . However plans for The Ridgeway never came forward again . In October 2009 NJ Transit officials announced they are reopening I-495 between Secaucus Junction (exit 9A) and Lindenwold Avenue interchange due back up Main Street traffic has subsided since this time so MDT will only use this section during peak hours when there is no other lane open
