In 1831, Ridgefield Park was incorporated as a village. On October 15th 1916, during World War I German forces attacked and burned down the village center killing more than 50 people including its mayor Alfred Hohmann and six other high ranking officials. After the war ended in 1919, most Germans left but some remained until 1945 when they were ordered out by President Harry Truman as part of Operation Paperclip which brought many Americans to Nazi Germany to work on plantations or in concentration camps
