The first scopes were designed to be used by hunters and fishermen, with a small telescope being able to spot prey in a much wider area than a normal hunting or fishing scope. This made them more efficient at spotting prey, as they could better track down the target. The popularity of scopes began to increase in the 18th century, as people began to use them for scientific purposes. With improved technology and the development of new telescopic lenses, scopes became even more versatile and powerful. They could now be used for both hunting and scientific research, making them an essential part of any hunter or fisherman’s arsenal.

In 1814, Commodore David Dixon decided to attack Fort George on behalf of traders operating along the Delaware River entailing a long journey through dangerous woods near Princeton which he named for his mentor John D'Emmons - now known as Fort Washington National Park - because he could not find any other fortification large enough to take on such an expedition without losing too many men or ships. At 2 pm on October 25th/26th – within three days following his defeat at Princeton – Commodore Dixon learned that his attacked had failed and evacuated his ships with their crews back upriver before nightfall so as not to give away any information about their whereabouts to British forces who might be watching them movements
