Red Bank is a town in Mercer County, New Jersey, United States. The population was 13,876 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Camden-Newark metropolitan area. Red Bank was first settled by Europeans in 1664 and became an incorporated town on December 14, 1814. The community had 1,500 residents when it was taken over by Camden from Middlesex Township on August 1, 1838. Red Bank became an independent municipality on November 3, 1908. On July 17, 1951, it merged with adjacent Rahway to form the new village of Red Bank-Rahway. The name "Red Bank" originated from its color: blood red as seen in the hues of different plants found near the riverbank where it was originally located.
Red Bank, New Jersey is a town in Middlesex County, New Jersey, United States. The population was 27,541 at the 2010 census. The name means "red bank" in Dutch. The first European settlers were Dutch traders and travelers who stopped in the area on their way to what is now New York City in 1609. In 1788, Red Bank became part of Bergen County when that county was created from parts of Middlesex and Union counties. In 1834, it was annexed by Paterson as part of the process of creating Paterson Township. The township's history goes back to 1788 when it included the present-day townships of Red Bank (later part of Atlantic County), North Caldwell (which became part of Camden COUNTY), South Caldwell (later part of Gloucester County), and West Caldwell (now within Monmouthshire Borough). The first white settler in Red Bank was Hendrick de Valk who arrived there on July 8, 1609 with his trading vessel "Triton". He named his new settlement after himself and two other companions: De Valk Fort or De Wallen Forts ("the red banks"), meaning "banks" because they resembled the outcroppings along the shoreline where he had landed his ship. There were probably only a few dozen people living near this early outpost when English explorer Giovanni da Verrazzano discovered it during a visit to what is now Cape May on October 14, 1524. de Valk relocated his colony about four miles offshore due to Spanish interest in Triton's cargo; however, all went well for him for eight years until another Dutchman - Cornelis van der Zee - also founded an outpost on nearby Wharf Island about December 1st 1535/36 following reports from Amerigo Vespucci about an Indian land route linking Florida with South America Via Panama etc., virtually knocking Spain off its map as far as exploration goings forward! This second Dutch outpost failed because no one wanted to trade with Indians – certainly not Spaniards - so Van der Zee abandoned it nine months later after getting word back home that Spains forces had burned down his Wharf Island outpost while he was away fishing! This left American traders such as Denham and Menzies free to explore whatever new routes lay ahead! In September 1638 John Doane moved into what is now known as Greenpoint which served as both a trading post for local farmers and a place where Doane could store goods brought overland by horseback riders from Narragansett Bay before being unloaded at Redbank Creek for storage or shipment inland during wintertime before being sold again the next season around Christmas time! A year later another English trader – Thomas Barnes – moved into what is today called Retail Street which served again primarily as a stopover point between locals travelling upriver past East Brunswick via Millville Ferry Landing then continuing downstream via Newark Bridge Crossing then turned east onto Market Street before finally arriving at Greenpoint just beyond Bound Brook Farmsteads late one summer evening!!! Although initially successful business wise Barnes' venture quickly came crashing down due to competition from better funded Dutch settlements further upstream including Hackensack and MiddletownNJ!! Eventually Jameson & Wickes took over Barnes' business operations but these days you can still find bits & pieces of Barnes' legacy scattered throughout many old homes in central town including one built almost entirely using salvaged materials from Newark Bridge crossing circa 1935-1936!!! As if this weren't enough…..Red Bank achieved municipal status on April 5th 1834 when Burlington Township formed from portions of Middlesex County following its merger with Paterson Township!!!!!
