This came as a surprise to many who had been expecting the city to keep growing even under tough economic times. At least some aspects of Red Bank's economy have bounced back since Mayor Scott made the announcement - such as new restaurants and businesses opening up in the past year alone! Red Bank, New Jersey is a town in Middlesex County, New Jersey, United States. The population was 21,553 at the 2010 census. Red Bank is part of the Newark-UMass-Hudson metropolitan area. The first permanent European settlement in what is now Middlesex County was made by English colonists during the 16th century on land that still sits within the town of Red Bank today. In 1714, George Washington and his older brother James founded Mount Vernon in present-day Arlington Township to serve as their winter home and summer estate. The Potomac Company's grant (dated February 3, 1715) to George Washington for 640 acres (2 km²) along both banks of the Raritan River granted him title to all of present day Middlesex County and portions of Essex and Sussex counties as well as parts of Hunterdon and Passaic counties. In 1833, when Princeton University was founded by trustees including John Witherspoon (a leader in Philadelphia's early colonization movement), it became an Ivy League school under charter from Rutgers University. Rutgers students had lobbied to have Princeton added to their list of schools because its location – just across the river from Newark – made it an ideal candidate for inclusion among America's " Five College Towns." In 1875, Rutgers merged with Princeton; both schools were renamed Ivy League institutions again in 1902. With enrollment soaring following World War II due to new economic opportunities generated by the GI Bill program and increased industrialization throughout NJ and beyond, Red Bank grew quickly into one of North America’s most vibrant towns nestled between Newark and Elizabethtown on Raritan Bayou/Lake Hackettie. Today’s downtown core retains much of its commercial past while also hosting several resurgent cultural attractions like The Cat House Theatre Company; Waterfront Park; and nearby Shipyards Landing State Park which has been designated a National Historic Landmark since 1975ka Red Bank was chartered as a borough on March 15th 1697 by Sir Peter Wentworth with Samuel Bogardus serving as its first mayor On September 5th 1714 Robert Barclay erected a public house at what is now known as Dutch Kills Creek Road called The Gilded Cage which served daily until destroyed by fire on October 10th 1714 On November 4th 1717 Jameson Livingston donated five acres (20 m²) near what is now Fourth Street corner Market Street for use as a village green . This donation led to further development around this site including construction of two churches: First Presbyterian Church built in 1724[now demolished] then Second Presbyterian Church built in 1800 . Reverend Lewis Morris who later served as pastor at both churches began removing trees from Rappahannock Creekbankdirection towards Market Street so that people could play ball on his private lot behind First Presbyterian Church where he resided until his death in 1802 . Reverend Morris' successor Dr.. William Smitherman officiated at first services at Third Presbyterian Church before moving worship temporarily to Dutch Kills Creek Road Chapel on October 26 th 1800 while repairs were being madeto First PresbyterianChurch . ReverendSmitherman later moved services back inside First Parish Church located today east side Main Street between Patrick Avenue & Hudson Avenue after various fires caused damage there over several years... ReverendSmitherman died suddenly aged 64 years while preaching service at Dutch Kills CreekRoad Chapel on December 20 th 1802 leaving unfinished tasks behind him... A group led by Ebenezer Drake purchased Rev Smitherman's property adjacent toDutchKillsCreekRoadChapeland began constructionofFirstPresbyterianChurchonMay 25 th 1803 finally openingtothepublicin1836 It should be noted that although Red Bank Borough existed for sixteen years prior to incorporation into Middlesex County on March 15th 1697,[3] it would not officially become part of either county until Act No 2 Of June 7Th 1700 which created Bergen Township - thus beginning “Middlesex County” history! Incorporation occurred without any formal vote or process other than signature from Mayor Samuel Bogardus! It should also be noted that upon incorporation into Middlesex County residents received free land upon purchase! This included all or almost all modern streetscape features currently extant within town limits including Dutch Kills creek road corridor leading into town center dating back directly thereto !!!!! Lastly note that many current street names such as Broadwalk etc., originated actually within previous borough boundaries such as Westville/Reddingburg etc....... Although some streets may have come about due primarily à events surrounding earlier borough incorporations such as Westville villeage acquisition circa 1896 or Reddingburg postwar reclamation efforts - ultimately all original street names :-)
