Ramsey, New Jersey is a town in Essex County, New Jersey, United States. The population was 10,604 at the 2010 census. Ramsey is part of the Newark–TOMA–Hudson Metropolitan Statistical Area. The two towns are considered to be sister cities because they share many of their cultural and economic ties. The first settlers in what is now Ramsey were Dutch farmers who arrived in 1672. They named the township after John Ramsey, an Englishman who had settled near Princeton, NJ some years earlier. By 1800, the area had been acquired by the Morris and Essex Railroad Company and became part of Englewood Township. In 1856, Englewood Township was combined with Garden State Park to form Hunterdon County and then split again as Ramseys merged into Hunterdon County in 1952. In 1876 (the same year as Trenton), Ramsey became one of five municipalities within Hunterdon County that joined forces with Rahway to form Rahway-Ramsey Municipality which still exists today as one of Monmouth County's six municipalities. On July 1, 1900, Ramsey incorporated as a borough from portions of Rahway and Union City following passage of a local ordinance approved by a vote at a meeting on July 4th unsigned by Mayor Haddonfield Jerome Seymour Jr.. The merger formed what is now known as Ramseys Borough which continued to exist until consolidation into Hunterdon County on December 11th 1954 pursuant to section 3-A of the county charter which provided for such consolidation under certain circumstances including when “the interests or needs” of both entities “diverged so materially that it would not be possible for them both to continue under their own management without significantly impairing each other’s ability to function effectively” On October 15th 1960 when all but four precincts in rural parts east and south forms eastern edge of town lost their voting power due increased population density caused by Interstate 95 freeway construction; this created an uproar among residents over what they saw as an unconstitutional encroachment upon their civil liberties; soon after pressure mounted from various organizations such as Mothers Against Drunk Driving (MADD), RAMSEY BOROUGH REFUSED TO RECEIVE INCREASED FUEL PAYMENTS FROM I-95 LIGHT RAILWAY COMPANY WHEN THAT SUMMARY WAS REVEALED IN A STATE OF THE CITY ACTIVITY REPORT FOR THAT YEARRAMSEY BOROUGH NOT ONLY DIDN'T PAY UP BUT ALSO WROTE LETTER TO THE CONGRESS SAYING THEY WERE "NOT CONVINced ABOUT THE IMPORTANCE OF INCREASING FUEL PAYMENTS"Ramsey Borough was dissolved on December 11th 1954 effective immediately due to its refusal to ratify increases proposed by the county government pursuant to section 3-A thereof which read: "Each municipality must establish rates for fuel services…and increase these rates no more than once every three years unless there is compelling evidence that growth requires an increase."As mentioned before outside pressures began mount resulting inRAMSEY BOROUGH REFUSING TO RECEIVE INCREASED FUEL PAYMENTS FROM I-95 LIGHT RAILWAY COMPANY WHEN THAT SUMMARY WAS REVEALED IN A STATE OF THE CITY ACTIVITY REPORT FOR THAT YEAR despite being told "not convinced about the importance...of increasing fuel payments", finally on February 2nd 1961 mayor Jerome Seymour Jr., responded writing "I have decided not too pursue this issue any further because we do not feel that it meets our communitys needs". subsequent actions taken included boycotts against several local businesses including Pringles potato chips during town hall meetings led by mothersagainstdrunkdriving while other businesses like Subway accepted payment increases On May 8th 2013 RAMSEY BOARD OF EDUCATION PASSES Ordinance No 013 establishing new school day starting time at 7am instead of 6am along with providing funding for inaugural classes 2014 RAMSEY BOARD OF EDUCATION PASSES Ordinance No 020 establishing early learning program beginning at 6pm instead of 5pm

The first store in Ramsey opened in 1840 and was called "The Store." In 1865, the town name changed to Ramseysville after Lewis S. Ramseys, an oilman who donated land for a school and depot on Main Street. On November 3rd of that year, RAMSEY TOWN HALL WAS OFFICIALLY built by Pte James McNaughton USMC during World War II to commemorate the many soldiers from this town who served during that war including Lt Col George W Bush Jr., Pfc Richie Malloy (the only American citizen killed while serving withquote;the UPN Marine units Middle East), Sgt Leroy Jorgensen (2nd platoon mortar team), Capt Robert J Ritchie (5th platoon infantry battalion). Today,Ramsey is a vibrant community with businesses such as Ashley Furniture & Flooring Co., PATHway Health Solutions Inc., Verizon Wireless NJ LLC., Seton Hall University's Ramseys College and local restaurants like KFC China Mobile USA LLC. It is also home to two public schools - PS 141st Armored Regiment High School which educates students from grades 7-12 and PS 142nd Armored Regiment Junior High School which teaches students through 8th grade English/math/science/social studies/chamberlainry/weaponsmanship programs for kids of all ages
Ramsey was founded in 1714 by John Ramsey. The town became a center for the fur trade, and saw a boom in its economy during the early 1800s. In 1829, Ramsey was incorporated as a borough. Over time, the borough grew more prosperous and professionalized its institutions, culminating in its incorporation into the city of Newark in 1930.
