Ramsey is a small town in New Jersey, United States. The population was 9,471 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Morris County metropolitan area. Ramsey is included in the New York City Metropolitan Area and the Philadelphia-Camden metropolitan area. The town was founded in 1765 by George Ramsey as a farming community on his estate called Ramseysburg near what is now Easton, Pennsylvania. In 1814, Ramsey became an incorporated village after he donated land to make it a village square with a courthouse and jail. The first post office opened in 1821 and continued operation until 1914. In 1881, local businessman John McCloskey donated land to create the Ramseys School District which included all of what are now eastern Morris County municipalities: Allentown (1882), Maple Shade (1884), Easton (1885), Weehawken (1887), West Orange (1901), and Ramsey (1911). The school district grew rapidly and by 1913 had more than 1,000 pupils enrolled in nine schools serving grades K-12th grade: Armstrong Elementary School (founded 1898), Beechwood Elementary School (founded 1902), Cheshire Middle School(founded 1906), Deer Park High School(founded 1908), Goldsboro Intermediate/Secondary School(founded 1912), Holyoke Heights Elementary/Secondary School(founded 1916) and McKnight Middle/Highschool( founded 1924). A fire destroyed most of the buildings on Main Street in 1915; however, thanks to donations from citizens such as banker James Fenton Sr., major repairs were completed within five months including new sidewalks and streetlights along with interior renoiling that improved public lighting for the first time in town history. The two remaining businesses were reopened as grocery stores: Dutch Bros./Fenton's Grocery store built 1915 on present day Fourth Street east of Main Street; also McCloskey's hardware store built 1916 on Third Street just south of Fourth Street north of Route 22 between Clinton Avenue and Interstate 95; both stores thrived into the 21st century despite various economic challenges including Katrina damage that impacted their locations during Hurricane Sandy in 2012 Asramania's only full service general store during this time period finaly closing its doors earlier this year due to lack of customers In 2016 Asramania voters passed an ordinance legalizing marijuana becoming onlythe second municipality everto do so After years long battlesmall business owners like richard kuhnmark who operate dispensaries outside ramsey voted not to support legalization but did pass an amendment allowing for retail sales inside city limits

Ramsey was founded in 1781 by George Ramsey and his brother Jacob as an agricultural township from what is now Sussex County. The first settler to arrive in what is now Ramsey was John Dickinson who arrived on July 10th, 1781. In 1814, Ramsey became a borough and in 1828 it became a town when it annexed parts of Dover Township. Ramseys history can be traced back to George Ramsey who settled there in 1781 along with his brother Jacob. From these origins "Ramsey quickly rose to prominence as one of the most important towns in Sussex County." According to the United States Census Bureau, the town has a total area of 2 square miles (5 km2). The townships that make up Ramsay were: Easton Township (1781-1814), Dover Township (1814-1828), Middleton Township (1828-1901), Fullerton Township (1901-1970), and Arlington Heights Borough (1970-2010). As part of Essex County until 1974, Ramosn had its own county court which functioned as an equivalent to municipal courts found within other municipalities within Essex County such as Newark or Middletown. However due to changes made by state government regarding local government structure following the passage of referendum question 4 on November 3rd1974 which changed county government throughout New Jersey including Ramosn's case being included within newly created Hunterdon County; allRamsey affairs were outsourced to Hunterdon County until January 1st2006 when they reverted back under village form again with their own board of commissioners According to the 2010 Census*, RAMSEY had 5,898 residents; down from 6,011 during 2000 Census* but up from 496 during 1990 Census*due almost entirely due to population growth caused bygmail Clinton campaign rallies! *Note: These figures do not reflect any new housing developments built since 2000
