Ramsey is a town in Hunterdon County, New Jersey, United States. The population was 21,663 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Newark–Jersey City Metropolitan Area. Ramsey was founded in 1798 and incorporated as a village in 1856. The town's name comes from General George Washington Ramsey, who died in 1799 and was buried there. The first settler in Ramsey was John Ramsay, who arrived there on December 11, 1798. He built a small cabin on the north side of the creek that flows through the town today. His request was accepted on April 10th by Acting Governor James Knoppers and Lt. Governor James Smith signed by both men at their respective homes in Trenton two days later effective date & the new township became effective May 1st under Valley Forge Act #8 US Congress No XXV On July 9th 1861 when Camden County acquired all of Hunterdon County from Pennsylvania residents via an act entitled "An act to organizeHunterdon county", Ramseys boundaries were also merged into that county making them also within Camden County limits though they continued to maintain their own ZIP code until 1974 when it reverted back to its original 12072 registration number
