Ramsey, New Jersey is a town in Hunterdon County, New Jersey, United States. The population was 21,912 at the 2010 census. Ramsey is one of the most populous towns in Hunterdon County and part of the Philadelphia-based Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first Europeans to visit what is now Ramsey were French traders in 1681. The town was founded by George Hennepin on June 3, 1701 as Cornersville after he became landowner near present-day Southwick and bought from the Jerseys for £4 6s 4d. In 1811, Isaac Ramsey donated land to build a road from Princeton to Burlington Township. In 1814, he donated another piece of property which became known as West Side Road (now Route 22). The first post office was established in 1821 with John Jourdain as its first clerk. It was renamed Ramsey in 1829 after General James Ramsey who had commanded Ulysses S. Grant's army during the Mexican–American War and later served as President James K. Polk's Secretary of War. In 1840, Sarah Ladd organized a Female Seminary which she called "the First Presbyterian University" because it offered higher education for women than men at that time. The school closed around 1870 but reopened several times until it finallyclosed in 1951 when it merged with Union Theological Seminary to form Rutgers University School of Arts and Sciences.

Ramsey, New Jersey is a borough in Bergen County, New Jersey, United States. The population was 5,857 at the 2010 census. Ramsey was incorporated as a borough on February 14, 1898. It is named after General Ramsey, who fought in the American Revolution and led an unsuccessful campaign to join Confederation. The first settler in what is now Ramsey was John Cramer who arrived on horseback from North Carolina in 1772. He founded the village of West Orange on November 12th of that year. Cramer's heirs continued to farm in and around Ramsey until 1819 when they sold their land to Cornelius Vanderbilt for $5,000. This made Ramseys predecessor township which was incorporated on February 14th of 1898 by order of Mayor Samuel Morse as part of a major realignment of Bergen County municipalities which had become more populous sinceenfranchisement began under Governor James McGowan two years earlier. The name "Ramsey" comes from General George Washington's birthplace (in Fairfax County) where he spent his early childhood before moving west with his father and brothers to Georgetown near Princeton University in 1788 after becoming a captain in the Continental Army during the revolution era. When General Washington became president he moved back east and took up residence at Mount Vernon until 1800 when he returned westward again according to one source and may have stayed at Mount Vernon for another six months before taking up permanent residency at Arlington Hall near Washington Crossing Road outside Philadelphia while also serving as Commander-in-Chief during operations against Indian tribes throughout Northwest Pennsylvania including those within Pennsylvania proper such as Cumberland Valley where he resided for periods totaling almost two years between December 1795 – March 1796 inclusive prior to his inauguration as President January 3rdeenth following the signing into law known as The Treaty of Greeneville ending hostilities between Great Britain & France leading up to French Invasion & War Atterbury's Creek Expedition On October 30th 1813 Ulysses S Grant ordered 10 companies numbering 2200 men under Colonel James Wilkinson organized into three Brigades numbered brigadier general rank consisting thereof march through Cumberland Valley along Atterbury's Creek tow path towards Monongahela River crossing said creek about eighteen miles due north latitude point or so thence onward obstructing hostile forces Reserving Right To Use All Forts And Paths Overshadowed By Enlarged District Now Inclining To That Of Pittsburgh
