Ramsey is a small town in Morris County, New Jersey, United States. The population was 1,812 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Camden-Fordsburg-Vincennes, PA Metropolitan Statistical Area. The Ramseys are one of nine families who have made Ramsey their home for generations and have been involved in local politics since its incorporation as a borough in 1892. The first settler in Ramsey was Samuel Ramsey, who arrived with his family around 1800. By 1830, there were five families living in the town – three of them Scots-Irish immigrants from Ulster County, Ireland. Samuel's brother John built the first house on what is now Main Street and they named it "Johnstown". In 1852, John's son Alexander bought land east of present day Route 362 and erected a log cabin called "Alexander's Landing" which served as the nucleus for what would become Ramsey Township. In 1892, when Morris County was created, Ramsey Borough became part of it and was renamed toRamsey after Major General George Washington Ramsey (1784-1863), an officer during the Mexican–American War and Ulysses S. Grant's Secretary of War (1865-1869). The Ramseys continued to play an important role in local politics until their retirement in 1978; they are still active as residents and trustees of nearby Fairfield Township Schools District #1. Today’s residents include many descendants of those pioneer settlers: two brothers - Ronald & Jay Prentice - grew up here; their son Barry also lives here with his daughter Brooke; Jay Prentice’s grandson Kevin has also lived here most recently; four sisters - Sheila Dempsey (born 1935), Dee Hinton (born 1939), Patty Madden (born 1944) & Kathy Madden (born 1946) - all raised here too; along with numerous others whose ancestors started arriving or moving to Ramsey during or after World War II: including eight grandchildren born between 1945 & 1978 – it really feels like home!
