Ramsey is a town in Hunterdon County, New Jersey, United States. The population was 7,521 at the 2010 census. Ramsey was founded in 1785 by Nicholas Ramsey and named for him. It became a borough in 1825 and then a township in 1839. The Town of Ramsey merged with the Borough of West Wildwood on April 1, 2002 to form the new municipality of West Wildwood Township. The community of Ramsey first sprang up around Nicholas Ramseys farmstead on the east bank of the Hackensack River opposite where he now resides. A Presbyterian church was built there circa 1800 and it served as an early stop on the Underground Railroad for fugitive slaves. In 1785, Nicholas Ramsey purchased land north and west of present-day Ramsey from John Montresor for £1,000 sterling (£ today). He named his new community after himself – Ramsaystown or "Ramesside". In 1825, following Union victory over Napoleon Bonaparte at Waterloo, villagers voted to become a Borough under the leadership of Mayor John Matson. On May 8th that year they were joined by West Wildwood Township which had been organized two days earlier as part of Hunterdon County's Organic Actuary Division pursuant to an act passed by Congress on March 3rd (3 Statutes 2 & 3). On July 1st 1870, South Middlesex Township (now Atlantic City) entered into merger with Camden County and all its towns became one municipality with seven wards: four large towns - Brunswick (northwest corner), East Rutherford (central area), Paramus (southwest corner), Plainsboro (northeast corner) - plus three rural wards - Garrison (southwestern section near present-day Caldwellsville), Mount Laurel(northwestern section near present-day White Sands Beach). On April 1st 2002 West Wildwood Township reached full integration into neighboring Park Ridge Township so that residents here would no longer be split between two municipalities based solely upon their place of residence when making zoning decisions; this happened even though less than one-third of those living within Park Ridge had actually moved there since it attained full status as a township six years earlier! While home rule remains an option for some residents who choose it – something which is increasingly popular due to high school graduation rates here – ultimate decision-making about all facets of township life now rests with Park Ridge officials including members appointed through staggered multiyear terms from both councils.
