Rahway is a town in Monmouth County, New Jersey, United States. The population was 3,853 at the 2010 census. Rahway was founded by Dutch and British settlers in 1727. It became an incorporated borough on February 15, 1873. On May 12, 1957, it merged with Edison Township to become Rahway-Edison Township. On December 1, 1978, Rahway-Edison Township again merged with Monmouth County to form Rahway-Monmouth County Borough. The borough's name changed back to Rahway on October 15, 2018. The original Dutch for "place of refuge" is found throughout the area and likely refers to the little streams that ran through the town's boundaries – one along the Hackensack River and one near what is now Haddon Heights – which made it a safe place for immigrants during their coming-out process. The first Europeans to arrive in what is now Monmouth County were Dutch settlers who arrived in 1727 as part of Governor Tryon's efforts to expand New Netherland beyond its original boundaries set by his father Netherlands East India Company CEO Hendrick Van Curtenbach. From these early pioneers came many of the residents who would populate Rahway over time: John Fenton (1728–1802), Daniel Archer (1730–1811), Nicholas Ziegler (1732–1807) and others began arriving here from what is now Westchester County beginning in earnest around 1740s; among those who arrived later were Philipszoon Bogaerts (1692–1768) and Jan de Wit(1698–1766). By 1800 there were about 350 people living in Rahway including 146 Puritans from Connecticut Colony under Captain Samuel Smith; however most of these newcomers soon returned home or joined other families living hereabouts after finding new opportunities within New Netherland or America itself.
