The Rahway telescope was built in 1874 by Capt. George P. Putnam and operated from the Rahway Observatory until it was destroyed by fire in 1917. The observatory, located on a hill overlooking downtown Rahway, had an aperture of 20 feet and equipped with a single 6-inch lens. putnam also built the first American observatory in New Jersey, which operated from 1877 to 1886 at Mount Hope on Long Island. The Mount Hope Observatory was one of six prototype Observatories for the Astronomical Society of America (ASA) when it was founded in 1865. In 1875, Capt. George Putnam donated land to the ASA on which they erected a new astronomical observatory called the Rahway Telescope which had an aperture of 20 feet and could be used by members with any type of telescope or instrument. In 1917, when the Rahway Observatory burned down, all evidence that it ever functioned as a telescope were lost forever! However, thanks to antiquarian efforts over time some photos and sketches have been recovered that provide insight into how this amazing structure functioned!

Rahway is a town in Middlesex County, New Jersey, United States. The population was 8,829 at the 2010 census. It is the smallest of the five towns in Middlesex County and has the lowest population density of any municipality in New Jersey. Rahway is also one of the most ethnically diverse communities in New Jersey due to its large number of Italian and Pakistani residents as well as Jewish, Hindu, and African American residents. Rahway was first settled by Dutch settlers in 1636. In 1837, it was incorporated as a township; it became a city on March 25, 1990. The name came from two places: "Rajah" (ruler) of Bengal who conquered parts of India during the 17th century and "Wawayanda" (a place where water can be found) which means "safe haven". The Manchester-based manufacturer Singer Sewing Machines produced their first machines here starting in 1909. Rahway is a town in Union County, New Jersey, United States. The population was 10,376 at the 2010 census. Rahway was first settled in 1784 by German immigrants, and became a village in 1834. It was incorporated as a town on February 24, 1881. Rahway is located on the west bank of the Hackensack River between Paterson and Elizabethtownships. The site where Rahway now stands was once part of an extensive Native American burial ground which extended from what is now South Orange to northumberland County. The area around present-day Rahway was originally occupied by the Lenape tribe before being acquired by European colonists in the late 17th century. In 1784, two settlers named Gottfried and Johann Georg Kapp purchased land near what is now Rahway from the Lenape for $1 each. The Kapp family resided there until 1819 when they sold their holdings to John Christie who renamed it "Christie's Landing". In 1800, Nicholas Long also established a farm east of present-day Rahway along what is now Easton Avenue and West Stockton Street; this farm would become one of the most important agricultural properties in central New Jersey due to its many acres of rich soil that were not cultivated elsewhere at that time. In 1814 Adam Smith bought land adjacent to Long's farm from him for $5 per acre with intentions of developing it into a townsite; however, no developments occurred due to lack of funding or interest from local leaders at that time. In 1824 William Fenton (the son of Revolutionary War veteran Nathaniel Fenton) founded another small farming community near modern day Elizabethtown Township; this community would eventually be renamed Rahway after his father's death in 1830. William Fenton had arrived in America specifically because he wanted to found a town within reach of both Philadelphia and Albany so he could sell goods manufactured there back home to his customers. As early as 1827, people were starting to move into what is today Rahway from surrounding towns such as Paterson and Elizabethtownships due to its good farmland and easy access to transportation including ferries across the Hackensack River: these early residents included several families who had purchased land alongside Nicholson Creek just south of present-day Newark while still living among the Lenni Lenape Tribe: these settlers are generally considered founders or original inhabitants ofRahways today). Ibn Khaldun described America as "a vast continent without bounds" during his stay here circa 1240 AD; later writers have also noted how important river commerce played throughout much of North America during this period
The Rahway Valley was first settled by the Lenape Native Americans in 1699. The area now known as Rahway was part of Middlesex County until 1814, when it became Bergen County. The population of Rahway increased rapidly during the 19th century due to its location at the intersection of two major highways, Route 10 and New Jersey Turnpike. During World War II, Rahway played a significant role in the war effort by providing munitions and supplies to both sides. In addition, the city developed a large military base which helped contribute to its economic growth during the war years. After the war, many jobs went away as production shifted to other areas of New Jersey. However, since then, Rahway has seen an increase in businesses and development along its downtown core.
