Rahway, New Jersey is a city in Mercer County, New Jersey, United States. The population was 30,836 at the 2010 census. It is the second-largest city in Mercer County after Trenton and the fifth-largest city in New Jersey overall. The Rahway River forms part of the municipal borders with Purchase Township to the east and west. The earliest known inhabitants of Rahway were Native Americans who lived on Long Island Sound before European contact. In 1664, English settlers from Yorktown landed on Long Island Sound and began a settlement called Staten Island. By 1685, there were about 100 English colonists living in what is now Rahway. In 1701, Nicholas de Montresor purchased 2 acres (0.8 km²) of land from John Livingston for £100 sterling. This land would becomeRahway Township which was organized as a township on April 14th, 1702 by Jameson & Williamson as “New Netherland” – one of four townships that formed Mercer County during its initial formation on February 4th, 1709). On October 25th of that year, King George II granted William Drummonde an exclusive charter to establish a trading post at present day’s junction of Route 202 and Interstate 95 near where the Rahway River flows into Trenton Bayou (now Delaware Bay). The first store opened at this location on December 15th 1800 by Drury & Co., selling goods made in England including wines and spirits bought direct from French traders off the Atlantic coast at Saint François de Terre aux Pins along with some local produce such as potatoes. During this time period also many other industries sprang up throughout Mercer County such as tanning skins produced around this time for corduroy clothing or for use in shoe making; spinning woolen cloth; dyeing cotton fabrics with dyestuffs like indigo or black lead; manufacturing cheese; brewing coffee; baking bread; etc. These businesses did not all thrived however because transportation had not yet been developed nor did marketing make it easy to sell products outside of town limits! A more important factor that contributed to early development within Rahway was its location right next to two major waterways: the Trenton Bayou which served as an outlet for river water coming downriver from Pennsylvania and then NJ's Boundary Waters Canoe Area (BWCAs), providing access to many riverside areas rich in game resources such as deer, elk and bear which could be hunted without leaving home; and then finally Newark bayou which connected both rivers contributing directly to rice paddies lying between Rutgers University's College Hill campus eastward towards Englewood Cliffs while Millville Rd ran concurrently southwesterly past Factory Point Light House across Millville Creek before ending just short of today's intersection of Routes 202/95 just beyond purchase township line – making it easily accessible for everyone! Additionally these waterways provided access points for boats transporting goods upriver or downriver between these various locations making life much easier for early entrepreneurs! Rahway is a town in Middlesex County, New Jersey, United States. The population was 9,822 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Newark-Boardwalk metropolitan area. The first Europeans to arrive in what is now Rahway were Dutch colonists who founded a small settlement on the west bank of the Raritan River in 1664. The original name for Rahway was Tapageerckhout (“tapageerchiefs”) because of their propensity for wearing high hats. In 1781, American Revolutionary War commander George Washington passed throughRahway and ordered his troops not to cross the Raritan River without permission from local authorities. In 1814, construction began on the new township hall and post office building which were designed by architect Ebenezer Howard and built using costal materials sourced aboard HMS "Bentwaters". The township was formed from parts of West Orange Township and Princeton Township on January 1, 1815. During World War II, Rahway made significant contributions to the war effort by creating both an armory and a munitions factory that produced weapons such as artillery shells and rockets used by Allied forces during World War II. After the war ended, much of these manufacturing properties were sold off or converted into housing developments while most of the armory remained operational until it was demolished in 1984. It also played an important role in cultural life with many talented artists living in or around Rahway before moving away for various reasons during different periods throughout history; including: Art Institute students who came to study art under then-director Edward Hopper; musicans like Count Basie who lived and worked near Trumpeter's Hall; writers like William Saroyan who wrote about life around town; photographers like Julius Salinger who took photos inside Trumpeter's Hall before he moved away years later). Many well-known residents including then-Mayor Jameson Hannaford (who went on to become UPN's Bellmica TV CEO) graduated from nearby Monmouth University while others attended Rutgers University upstate where they received their undergraduate degree before moving on to successful careers such as law enforcement officers or business executives.
