After years of decline due to various factors including budget cuts and competition from larger towns such as Paramus and Paterson, Rahway's economy rebounded with the opening of two new retail stores - ShopRite Supermarket inside the old Town Hall building on Main Street and Wal-Mart supercenter located next door on Ridge Road - along with restaurants such as TJ Maxx and Hardees Plus becoming more prevalent throughout the town center while arts organizations like Jazzfestivals took root throughout central New Jersey within walking distance of both shopping malls. As usual with any economic turnaround there are attendant social changes; some older residents have left for better jobs elsewhere while others have brought children or grandchildren into these communities so that they too can join those working in downtowns or outside cities near airports where job opportunities abound but there are no schools close by offering affordable tuition rates for students seeking advanced degrees beyond high school level. Rahway, New Jersey is a town in Monmouth County, New Jersey, United States. The population was 23,553 at the 2010 census. It is situated on the eastern bank of the Delaware River. The Rahway name comes from Brandywine Creek and Englishman John Rahway's 1728 purchase of 6 square miles (15 km²) of land east of Newark for $5 per acre ($2/ha). In 1834, Rahway became part of the new township of Easton and changed its name to Rahway Township. On December 15, 1835, it was granted a charter as a city by Pennsylvania governor Robert Morris. The first mayor was George Cohan and the first council was made up of 10 members: 5 men and 5 women. On October 22, 1839, Philadelphia Gaslight Company leased 2 acres (8 ha) north of Straight Street for $10/year and named it City Hall Square after Mayor Cohan's home on Spring Garden Road in Easton Township; this area now forms part of downtown Rahway with two large shopping centers – one originally called Edison Plaza followed by an additional mall across Broadwalk Avenue – as well as 12 other small businesses including nine restaurants and five banks. Under pressure from developers – led by Emanuel Levey – who wanted to build more high-rise housing or office space along Broadwalk Avenue instead of retail development near City Hall Square, Mayor Cohan opposed what he saw as an encroachment on his rights to use public lands for his personal benefit only; he resigned from office in 1840 after being impeached by the Pennsylvania House of Representatives but continued to campaign against developer interests until his death in 1867. On February 25th 1861 through order dated February 24th 1861in response to a resolution passed at Constitutional Convention convened in Trenton regarding Municipal power over roadways within Townships so that such power may be vested therein exclusively with Township authorities subject only thereto without any interference from outside sources’ the Borough Council approved Resolution No 8 which created Streetsboro Boulevard between South Orange Boulevard and State Route 33 just eastof Union Station
The Rahway area has been inhabited for many centuries. In the early 1600s, a group of Dutch settlers called the Batteaux founded a community on what is now Rahway Avenue. The town was named after John Rahway, an Englishman who had come to New Jersey in 1675. The first store in the town was built by Mr. and Mrs. Cramer in 1768. By 1800, Rahway had a population of around 160 people and it became a stop on the New Jersey Railroad. In 1832, the town was incorporated as part of Middlesex County and it remained an agricultural center until the mid-19th century when industry began to take hold. In 1881, Rahway become one of two towns in New Jersey that were selected to be part of the city of Newark (the other being Paterson). As Newark grew rapidly, however, it desired to keep its small rural community separate from downtown with its own school district and government structure. On July 1, 1911, Newark annexedRahway into their city limits while retaining its small rural community status quo. In 1916-17, Rahway also became home to one of the first municipal libraries in America when construction began on what is now known as First United Methodist Church building on Market Street NW. In 1952-53, during Mayor James Aiello's term as mayor (a time when Newark was experiencing rapid growth),Rahway achieved notoriety when several law enforcement officers were killed outside City Hall by shots fired by vandals who believed they were occupying City property without permission! Mobster Bugsy Siegel later admitted responsibility for this attack which served as a turning point in public opinion against Mayor Aiello and his administration
