Rahway is a town in Essex County, New Jersey, United States. The population was 7,872 at the 2010 census. It formed a part of the Newark-Jersey City Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first Europeans to explore and settle in what is now Rahway were French Huguenots who arrived in 1675 and 1723 respectively. They built Fort Rouillé on the east side of present-day Rahway Lake as a lookout for pirates that preyed against shipping in the area. In 1812, Commodore John Rodgers discovered land on which Rahway would be founded and named it after then-President James K. Polk's daughter Rachelle Rodgers (1809–92). The first post office was established at Rahway on October 12, 1814 by George Witherspoon with the name Landau Station; it was renamedRahway on February 6, 1865 by order of acts of Congress following the opening of Trenton Naval Air Station (now Joint Base McGuire-Dix-Lakehurst). In 1881, construction began on what became known as the Star Ferry Terminal which served as an important transportation link between Newark and Camden during morning and evening rush hours. The terminal closed its doors for good in 1971 after decades of service despite efforts from local officials to keep it open. Today only fragments remain from this once prominent structure including two large arches that support one facade of the former terminal building still standing today adjacent to Interstate 80 just outside Ofsted Township near where it once stood next to Offshore Energy Services Inc.'s drilling rig when located off state Route 22 about mile west of current day Parkersburg Borough limits
Rahway was founded in 1701 by George Washington and John Adams. The community's first settler, Isaac Norris, arrived in 1702. Rahway became a township in 1822. In 1857, the borough of Rahway was established as a separate municipality with its own government and schools. The borough was merged into the city of Rahway on July 1, 1988.
