Rahway is a town in Mercer County, New Jersey, United States. The population was 23,586 at the 2010 census. The name derives from the Rahway River and its former location as part of the Town of Rahway on the border of Monmouth and Ocean Counties. The first Europeans to explore this area were Dutch traders in 1624-25. By 1676, English colonists had established a trading post at Rahway Creek by purchasing land from Dutch settlers who had abandoned it. In 1701, Rahway became an incorporated town under the name of Elizabethtown after Queen Anne granted it a charter for that purpose. It grew rapidly due to its transportation and industrial advantages over neighboring towns such as Deal and Brick Township. In 1834, Rahway was designated as the county seat of Mercer County; however, because Elizabethtowns population exceeded that of Mercer's (the new county seat) by more than twofold, this designation was revoked in 1835 and replaced with Rahway proper. The originalRahwaysville burned down in 1903 but has been reconstructed several times since then including most recently in 2006-2007 as part of township planning efforts led by Mayor John Kappas According to the United States Census Bureau, the borough has a total area of , all land. As of the 2000 United States Census there were 23,581 people living inRahway Borough who identified themselves as being either "Hispanic or Latino", "White alone", "Black or African American alone", or "Two or more races". There were 1,912 households out of which 26% had children under the age Of18 living with them, 45% were married couples living together, 15% had a female householder with no husband present, and 37% were non-families. 27% of all householdswere made upof individuals and 11% had someone living alone who was 65 years old or older. Of those 25%, 8% lived below poverty line while 10% included someone over 64 years old

It is the second largest town in Mercer County after Middletown and the fourth largest in New Jersey. Founded by English colonists in 1740 as a small settlement on the border of Middlesex and Monmouth counties, Rahway grew rapidly due to its location near railroads and other transportation hubs. By 1871, it had become an important agricultural center with over 50 businesses and 2,000 residents. The modern-day city of Rahway was formed from parts of both Rahway Township and Rahway village in 1957. In 1969, it became one of two townships within Mercer County to be abolished because of lack of population growth or tax delinquency; the other township was South Amboy. The original Dutch settlers arrived in what is now Mercer County during the early 1600s; they were farmers who built their homes along river valleys. One account says that when Nico van Nieuw Amsterdam landed at North Bergen on July 12, 1664 he found a large tract of land which he named "Rahwe'n" (the word meaning "humble"). Others claim that this land may have been part of what is now Newark (now part of New York City). In 1740 Dutch colonists founded what would eventually become Rahway on the border between Middlesex and Monmouth Counties as a small settlement named for Hendrick de Vos (alias Nicholas) van der Werf who owned some property within present-day Rahway Township. On April 14th following their arrival many people including Hendrick's older brother Jacobus came out from Holland to welcome them into the new country but they were not sure if they should name their settlement after themselves or someone else since there were no natives living around them at that time! The first settler to arrive was Nicholas van der Werf himself followed shortly thereafter by his wife Sara en Johannes (both baptized under different names). On October 15th following Patriots victory over Braddock’s forces at Saratoga Field NY there was great rejoicing throughout NJ when news reached European settlements that General Howe had finally beaten Forbes’ army which had invaded Canada several weeks earlier! At this time many people chose to celebrate by going out drinking whereupon local brewer Cornelius Hennepin set up shopmethylating beer called "Preston Ale" which quickly became popular throughout New England! For years afterwards locals would gather around Mendham Park enjoying ripe cider or freshly baked cookies while listening to music played either organically or amplified through home speakers made from logs brought downriver from mills in River Edge NJ! This event also served as an annual festival attracting visitors from all over northernNJ bringing with them food and Beverages such as Pot Roast & Bottle Jugglers – today known as Pancake Day Parade!!! In 1776 Joshua Freeman moved his family here from nearby Perth Amboy where he had been born three years prior. Joshua began farming operations immediately upon arriving however it wasn't until much later before he discovered how valuable water rights were located near present day Uniondale; this allowed him To build one ofrewithstanding some guy named George Washington laughed when told about it back then….. water rights are still extant today!! After purchasing 6 acres next door to Joshua's farmrand James Fenton purchased additional land grant #934 for $135/acre on May 22nd 1786 just north Of current day Uniondale……….James Fenton would continue owning/managing this piece of ground until his death on November 10th 1800…………….Today this parcel forms most central eastern section OFRahway…………………………………..
