In Rahway, New Jersey, the first firearms were used in a village fight on February 5th, 1834. The first shooting at an outdoor target was done by George Washington Carver at a shoot hosted by Colonel John Starkweather. On October 10th of that year, Rahway residents fought their first gun battle with the Morris County Militia.
Rahway is a small town in New Jersey, United States. The population was 3,782 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Rahway Park–CBS Television City section of Union Township and is located on the border of Middlesex County and Monmouth County. The first Rahway settlers were Dutch in 1664. They took over land from English proprietors, but were expelled in 1674 by King Charles II because they did not swear allegiance to him. In 1701, General John Paterson founded what would become Rahway Village on an area now known as North Street. For many years it was one of the most important villages in central New Jersey due to its strategic location between Newark and Camden. In 1853, when Rahway became a borough, Patterson decided to make it an incorporated village so that its residents could vote on city ordinances and be represented on local government committees which had a bearing on their daily lives. By 1870, however, township status had been given to Rahway only because it lay within Union Township; without township status there would have been no reason for Rahway developers to invest in land hereabouts – they would have gone elsewhere! When Union Township was merged into Middlesex County in 1998, most of what once constituted Rahway's downtown square footage – including much of Patterson's original village site – became part of nearby Woodbridge Township (though some remnant buildings still stand). Rahway was founded in 1795 by pioneers from New York. The town was named for the Rahway River, which ran through it. In 1811, Rahway became the capital of New Jersey. It was here that Governor William Livingston presented his plan for a new state government and set up the first legislative assembly in America. On July 4, 1821, New Jersey became a state and Rahway became its capital. During the Revolutionary War, Rahway sided with Great Britain but after the war ended, it rejoined the United States. After the war, many of New Jersey's farmers moved to Rahway and began to establish what is now one of North America's most important agricultural communities. In 1865, Rahway incorporated as a borough and remained an independent municipality until 1984 when it merged into Paterson Township. The township has experienced some significant changesover time including becoming home to both Paterson University and Trenton International Airport. Today, Rahway is a vibrant community with many cultural attractions such as its rich history and art galleries as well as modern-day shopping opportunities available at local stores like Macy's and Sears inside the Gateway Mall on Elizabeth Avenue near Interstate 95.
The Rahway Railroad was a short line railroad in New Jersey that operated from 1868 to 1984. The company operated along the Monmouth and Delaware Rivers, connecting Rahway with Hackensack, Passaic, and Newark. The railroad was acquired by the Conrail Corporation in 1984 and its tracks were sold to the New York Central Railroad.
