Rahway is located on the border of Middlesex and Sussex counties. The first Europeans to visit what is now Rahway were Dutch fur traders who landed there in 1664 as part of their survey of New Netherland. In 1701, John Montresor and his group of investors founded the Mount Pleasant plantation around what is now Rahway Creek. They named it for a house they had seen on an island near Princeton in Mercer County. The first white settler from Rahway was Isaac Howell in 1732, who built a gristmill on Great Falls creek near present day Indica Road and Main Street. Howell's mill became the first commercial establishment west of Philadelphia when it began grinding flour for local merchants in 1740. In 1815, Robert Morris purchased land east of present day Rahway from Peter Carpenters and founded Morrisania Township which included much of what today forms Rahway Township along with portions of Essex and Sussex Counties. But by 1828, most all vestiges of Morrisania were gone and only a small remnant remained within present-day Rahway Township limits before being annexed by townshipwide boundaries in 1902 following the creation of municipalities within Middlesex County (later renamed NJ). According to the 2010 United States Census Bureau, there are 21,811 people residing in Rahway Township; thisincludes 10,614 households (57% occupied), 524 families (29% occupied), 15 non-families (3% occupied), and 2 members (1% occupant)of the military forces within its borders.. Of these residents 10%, or 11%, identify themselves as Black or African American; 3%, or 4%, identify themselves as Hispanic or Latino; 1%, or 1/2%, identify themselves as Asian American; 1/4%, or 0.5%, identify themselves as Native American Hawaiian or Other Pacific Islander; while 2 members (1%)ofthe military forces reside inside township boundaries

On November 6, 2009, the township voters passed a referendum making it an all-permanent municipal government separate from Eastwick Township by merging their two governments into one entity under the name "Rahway Municipality". According to the United States Census Bureau, Rahway had a total area of , of which was land and (0.14%) was water.
Rahway was founded in 1795 by Nicholas Rahway and his wife, Anne. The Rahways were the first white family to live in the township, which is now part of Union County. In 1812, the Rahways donated land to form what is now eastern border of Union County. They also built a gristmill on their donation. In 1814, Rahway Township was organized and named for Nicholas Rahway.
