Rahway is a town in Monmouth County, New Jersey, United States. The population was 8,868 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Atlantic City metropolitan area. The first Europeans to visit what is now Rahway were Dutch settlers who arrived in 1624 and called it "Rijkmond", meaning rich land. The English explorer John Cabot sailed into Monmouth Bay on his ship "Beagle" in 1502 and named the bay after informer Rheinfeldt van der Borgh (1501-1576), captain of the Dutch vessel De Vorst. In 1598, Samuel de Champlain visited Rahway and named it for Nicholas Hervey, 1st Baron Arlington (1488-1541). In 1748, during the American Revolutionary War, British troops burned down a inn here, which led to retaliatory raids by local Tories. On July 5th of that year, Patriot forces under General George Washington attacked British positions around Trenton while they were sheltering at an overpass here; this marked the first time Americans had engaged in open warfare against their opponents outside of Boston. After weeks of skirmishes and shelling throughout central Monmouth County, as well as near Princeton and Trenton proper, on July 18th Washington finally defeated Forbes’s British forces at Saratoga Springs north of present day Rahway with slight losses to his own units: thereafter known as “the Battle of Saratoga” or simply “the Battle” because no one achieved significant victory over their counterparts from within Britain ashore despite months-long fighting across many battlefields simultaneously across North America including Newark and Burlington Counties west of Philadelphia’s Quaker colony on Long Island Sound). This event helped establish American military might east of Long Island Sound and long prefigured Ulysses S.
