Rahway is a town in Mercer County, New Jersey, United States. The population was 24,623 at the 2010 census. It is the second-largest municipality in Mercer County after Mercersburg and has a land area of 20 square miles (50 km2). Rahway is located on the north side of the Passaic River and includes parts of the towns of Dumont and Union. The first Europeans to arrive in what is now Rahway were Dutch farmers who established a farmstead called "Hertogenbosch" in 1664. A half mile upstream from where Rahway now stands, they built an artificial harbor to store goods brought downriver by boat. The name "Rahway" was derived from a word meaning "to row upstream." In 1714, British colonists arrived in what is now Mercer County and set up camp near what became Rahway. They named the new settlement after John Rayburn, an American Revolutionary War hero who had served with General George Washington's army at Trenton and Princeton. By 1727, all white European settlers had left for various reasons – including Native Americans – leaving only African slaves behind. During the American Revolution, Patriot forces managed to capture Fort Lee on April 12th, 1775; however they failed to take Trenton which led to their defeat at Saratoga two days later on July 18th. As a result of this unsuccessful battle, many Loyalists fled into Pennsylvania but some decided to stay and fight while others evacuated through Canada or Westchester County into New York State. In 1780 (following the Treaty of Paris), all black Americans living within 1/4 mile (0.6 km) of any white person were ordered removed by Order Of Colonial Governor Nicholas Frelinghuysen without notice or legal process as part of Great Britain's attempt at racial reconciliation following its victory over France duringthe revolution. This order directly impacted young Rahway residents as it meant that their families would be separated forever and would never be able to live together again under one roof despite being born within three miles (5 km) of each other across eight different counties! Ramsey Township took over jurisdiction for blacks living east of Route 9 outside those boundaries until 1855 when that township merged into Mercer County with neighboring Union Township becoming Rahway Township effective July 1st that year according to legislation passed by Congress which vested local government authority within Mercer County subject only to countywide referendum approval pursuant Article IV Section 2 thereof “All questions touching municipal affairs which may come before them shall be submitted either by vote or resolution” Accordingly referendum results dated November 3rd 1855 showed 71% (+/- 4%) support for incorporation into township form vs 19% (-3%) against incorporation as requested by petitioners Prior thereto no such election having taken place because township officials could not attend due lack thereof duly qualified electors residing therein Afterward both Ramseys and Union received petitions requesting annexation back into township forms accepted February 25th 1860 thereby completing cessation resulting from referendum results + noncompliance with order

In 1837, Rahway became part of New Jersey as a township due todensity changes within Mercer County. In 1863, Abraham Lincoln was born here; he later served as an U.S. senator from New Jersey and as commander-in-chief of the Union army during the American Civil War (1861-1865). In 1865, after Virginia's secession from the Union, Rahway became part of ConfederateNew Jersey and propped up by Confederate forces until it fell to Union forces four years later during Reconstruction following Virginia's admission into the United States as a free state. After Reconstruction ended in 1877, Rahway experienced rapid growth thanks to transportation improvements made by railroads such asthe Trenton Railroad and various agricultural advances which allowed for more extensive development than had been possible before. By 1930 therewere over 10,,000 residents living inRahwingtownshipsand village formeastern peripheryhad declined by half duetooutsourcingofjobsbynew industrialistsand increased competition from nearby municipalities such as Elizabethtownand East Brunswick Township on the eastern edge of Mercer County
Rahway was founded in 1748 by Nicholas Rahway and his wife, Anne. The town is located in Union County, New Jersey and is part of the Philadelphia metropolitan area. The Rahways were among the first Europeans to settle in what is now Rahway Township. In 1760, Nicholas's father-in-law, Abraham Dutcher, built a gristmill on the southern edge of town. In 1768, Rahway became a borough in Union County. On February 14, 1834, Rahway incorporated as a city under the name of "Rahway Heights." On May 15, 1896, it merged with neighboring Haddon Heights to form the current city of Rahway.
