Rahway is a town in Hunterdon County, New Jersey, United States. The population was 18,876 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Camden-Cookstown Metropolitan Statistical Area. The Rahway Armory fire occurred on December 14, 1903 when two rifles were discharged while being stored in the armory's locked firearms room. One bullet ricocheted off a door and hit one of the rifle's magazines; it caused no injuries to anyone else in the room. Rahway was originally settled by Dutch farmers in 1664 and was incorporated as a borough on November 12, 1909. The name "Rahway" comes from English settlers that landed there in 1685 along with their families and equipment. The first post office opened in 1919; it moved to its current location on Market Street in 1936. On October 1, 1927, Rahway became the site of what would become arguably one of America's most infamous gun suicides: John Edward Gifford shot and killed himself with nine shots from his pistol inside his own home after learning he had been named class president of his high school Class Of 1928
Rahway is a small town in Bergen County, New Jersey, United States. The population was 5,844 at the 2010 census. It is part of the New York City Metropolitan Area. The Rahway ZIP code 76536 has a population of 11,898. The first Europeans to Visit the area were French traders and explorers who landed on Long Island in 1609 and 1610. They named it "Raviau" after one of their leaders, Ravanelles de la Croix (1554–1626). In 1714 an Englishman, Ethan Allen, explored this area and named it "Rahway". He located a stream called Rahway Creek which he thought might lead to Separateonga Lake in what is now Union County. However, he could not find any water there and abandoned his exploration attempt in 1716. In 1794 Jonas Salk developed a vaccine against smallpox that helped make modern medicine possible. He came to Rahway from Philadelphia with his family in 1881 when they started a farm there with $1 per acre (in 2019 dollars). At that time Rahway had about 100 people living on 15 acres of land. In 1892 local miller John Salk founded Salk's Mills as the first commercial paper mill in North America using equipment from Germany’s Kappelstein Paper Mill near Frankfurt am Main. In 1924 Jens Lehmann became president of American Tobacco Company and moved the company’s headquarters from Baltimore to Rahway where he set up operations including production of Marlboro cigarettes for American Tobacco until its acquisition by British Smokers in 1961. The post office was established at Rahway on March 12, 1903; it served as an adjunct to nearby Paterson until 1915 when it became its own separate postal district under Bergen County authorities responsible for both districts (). There have been few changes toRahways demographics since then- most residents continue to be engaged in agriculture or other rural pursuits such as manufacturing or service work- but some recent arrivals have included students studying at Middlesex University & Rutgers University School of Engineering or professionals working within businesses such as Google Fiber etc.. It is home to two high schools:clairaide High School & Southport Middle/High School along with several churches: St Monica Catholic Church (#2), First Baptist Church (#1) & Methodist Episcopal Zion Congregational Church (#3).
