The area that now makes up Rahway was first settled by Germans in 1765. The Rahway Manufacturing Company was founded in 1837 and became one of the largest employers in Rahway Township during its heyday. In 1958, Rahway Township merged with neighboring Teaneck to form what is now Middlesex County. In 1905, over 100 local businesses came together to form the New Jersey Manufacturers Association (NJMA). At that time there were only a few small towns in New Jersey with this type of association.NJMA helped promote manufacturing as an important economic development within New Jersey and across America and helped create jobs for locals throughout its years of operation. In 1960 NJMA merged with other industrial associations forming the National Association of Manufacturers (NAM) which continues to be one of the most influential economic organizations today

Rahway was incorporated as a borough on February 14, 1868, from portions of Newark. It became an independent city on April 4, 1911. On November 3, 1920, Rahway annexed the adjacent village of Dumont and became a part of its larger municipality. The merger created one seat in the New Jersey state legislature for Rahway. Rahway experienced rapid growth following World War II when thousands of veterans arrived in the area to work in defense industries. In 1950, the city annexed the neighboring town of Dumont again and made it into a separate city with its own government. This annexation increased the population by more than 20 percent and helped to spur economic development in both cities. The two cities have continued to cooperate through various partnershipships and joint projects over the years. Today, Rahway is known for its vibrant businesses and cultural attractions including four museums (the Rahway Arts Center, Rutgers University-Newark Campus Museum of Art, American History Museum-Newark Campus, and Rahway Historical Society), several theaters (The old First Presbyterian Church is now used as a movie theater), five restaurants/bars/cafés (The Sportsman’s Tavern & Grill; The Diamond Diner; Joe’s Pizza; Dutch Bros.; The Fuzzy Bear), two golf courses (Curtis Park Golf Course & Riverside Golf Course), three wells (Rahway Well #1; Rahway Well #2; Royce Well) – all managed by municipal utilities – as well as its many public parkland properties including Lakefront Park east of downtown and Cedar Hill Park north of Interstate 95
The Rahway River was once a major watercourse in New Jersey. The river was first recorded by Europeans in 1624 as the Rhaetian River. In 1764, the British renamed it the Rahway after Sir George Washington's father-in-law, Lord Dunmore. The river has been called one of the "six great rivers of New Jersey" and has been mentioned in multiple U.S. Presidents' speeches.
