Rahway is a town in Middlesex County, New Jersey, United States. The population was 23,746 at the 2010 census. It is the largest town in Middlesex County by population and second-largest by land area. Rahway's history dates back to 1795 when it was established as a small village on the Rahway River. In 1837, Rahway became an incorporated borough after being created from part of Hamilton Township. As of the 2010 Census, its population was 27,827 reflecting the increase of 657 (+2%) from 26,643 in 2000. The name "Rahway" comes from Dutch word "Rahwaal", meaning "to rise." The original settlers were farmers who started growing rice near what is now Old Bridge Road and Main Street in 1795. By 1800 they had built two churches and started marketing their rice products across the river to other villages in nearby Middlesex County. In 1837, they voted to become an incorporated borough which included parts of Hamilton Township east of Route 206 and west of Route 812 (the present day Weehawken). In 1915, during World War I, Rahway became one of only a few towns in New Jersey (along with Hackensack) that accepted draft cards without having any interview or questions asked about character or qualifications for service etc., allowing anyone who wanted to fight (or just couldn't wait to get out) to do so without worrying about leaving their home or family behind. When war ended less than two months later there were no more opportunities for soldiers to join up so many people decided instead not to return home and stay put – this decision helped contribute greatly to Rahway's rapid growth over the next several decades as businesses reopened and people returned home from wars all around America including World War II when thousands more made the move here! In addition to its manufactures, Rahway also has a large agricultural sector which includes raising pigs and chickens, growing crops such as corn and beans, and producing dairy products.
The first settlement in Rahway was made on the site of present-day Rahway, New Jersey in 1682. The town's name is derived from a Shawnee Indian word meaning "place where the reeds grow." In 1714, Samuel Hall founded the first tavern in Rahway. By 1800, there were over 100 businesses operating in Rahway. In 1804, Brigadier General Anthony Wayne fought at Gettysburg and was awarded the Medal of Honor for his actions that day. On October 1, 1825, Rahway became part of Uniontown Township when it was formed from parts of Hamilton Township and Monmouth County. On November 3, 1852, New Jersey took part in the Mexican-American War by declaring war on Mexico and ratifying a Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo which ended hostilities between America and Mexico. At this time, many homes and businesses were destroyed by fire as a result of wartime damage. On November 15th 1860, during The American Civil War (1861-1865), Rahway residents voted to secede from New York City due to their concerns about slavery and its effects on their community. They reaffirmed their secession vote two months later when they passed a resolution authorizing full military service for New Jersey within Confederate States Of America should war break out between America and Mexico again. Many people who lived in or around Rahway during these years may have served in the Union army or navy while others may have been involved with local businesses such as grocery stores or shipyards that supplied munitions to both sides during the war. After The American Civil War ended (1865), many people returned home to rebuild what had been lostwidespread crop failures followed which caused much Economic instability until well into the 20th century
