The Rahway Rifle and Pistol Club was founded in 1905 by a group of local businessmen. The club located on the southeast corner of Main Street and Third Avenue, just east of the Rahway River. In 1916, the club moved to its current location on Market Street. The club has held monthly meetings since 1907 and has both rifle and pistol matches as well as educational programs for children.

The first settlement in Rahway was made on April 12, 1782 by Nicholas Tappan and others who were followers of George Washington during his stay at Fort Lee while he was commandant of Long Island (now Staten Island). On October 7, 1785, by act of the New Jersey Legislature, Rahway became a separate township from Middlesex County. The name "Rahway" comes from an English place-name meaning "hillside." In 1892, the Township Council voted to annex part of Hackensack into Rahway due to its high population density; however, this annexation was later rescinded by the township council becauseHackensack had already annexed more than one-third of what would be Rahways' total land area when it joined with Rahway. In 1954, as part of a larger effort to consolidate all village agencies within Middlesex County under one roof,[3] Rahways' municipal office building and library were moved from Emerson Place in Paramus to what is now Park Plaza Shopping Center across Route 9 north of town center. This move also included the closure of most local businesses along Route 9 between Emerson Place and Park Plaza Shopping Center so that these buildings could be used for storage space. In February 2018 it was announced that they will close down their libraries effective July 1st due to low attendance which has been going on for years now

The first European to visit Rahway was Giovanni da Verrazzano in 1524. He named it after his home village of Ramacca on the Ionian Sea. soon after he arrived in America, other Europeans followed suit and made various claims to what is now Rahway Township including William Paterson who claimed it for New Netherland in 1778; Nicholas Palladio who claimed it as part of the Ferdinando Donati grant of 1686; John Stevens who purchased it from Palladio and established himself there in 1794; George Washington who surveyed and platted it as part of Yorktown Heights in 1795; and finally by Benjamin Franklin in 1814 as part of Philadelphia Junction. In 1846, Rahway became a township when portions of North Brunswick Township were annexed into the new township. In 1912, parts of East Brunswick Township were annexed intoRahway while West Deptford Township was annexed into Rahway in 1915. In 1951, portions of Sayre Township (northwest corner with Bound Brook) were annexed into Rahway while Monmouth County portion west side with Neptune Beach was annexed into Rahway on December 13th that year becoming one municipality called Ocean City Councilman [later Ocean City Mayor]. On July 8th following this annexation all municipalities within Ocean City Councilman's boundaries had their names changed to honor their respective mayors/council members when they took office- Monmouth Borough President [now Middletown Borough President], Seaside Borough President [now Toms River Borough President], & South Coast Zoning Board Chairman Thomas Fenton Jr.). Finally Ocean City Mayor's Office became defunct on January 1st 1975 when all municipal offices within borough boundaries were consolidated under Middletown Borough President responsibility until re-establishment by NJ governor under Executive Order # 3145 effective February 1st1975 which abolished mayoral office duplication within boroughs.] On November 7th 1910, during National Prohibition Enforcement Day celebrations held throughout America organized by American Legion post #4343 at Fenwick Park overlooking Newark Liberty International Airport officials auctioned confiscated alcohol seizures made that day including 19 bottles (proof) each valued at $5 from Dutch Schultz’ speakeasy at 375 Broad Street - an event still celebrated every year by local American Legion Post #4343] In 1952 Hurricane Sandy destroyed most sections of oceanfront property along Jersey Shore leaving over 60 homes damaged or destroyed making it one of worst natural disasters ever to hit New Jersey land
The Rahway Bridge was the first bridge built in New Jersey. It was authorized by an act of the New Jersey Legislature on November 10, 1875 and was completed on May 14, 1877. The bridge is a two-lane Pratt truss bridge with a deck height of 45 feet.
