Princeton, New Jersey is a town in Mercer County, New Jersey, United States. The population was 23,857 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Newark–Jersey City Metropolitan Statistical Area. Princeton was founded by George Washington and John Adams in 1765 as a small farming town on the east bank of the Susquehanna River. In 1815, Princeton became an independent city and remains one of the most prestigious universities in America. The townsite where Princeton now stands was first developed by Presbyterian settlers in 1795 to provide grazing land for their cows. At that time there were no schools or hospitals in Mercer County and neighboring Delaware Township so residents traveled to Princeton for education. By 1800, there were six stores and 100 residents living in what is now Princeton Borough; two churches functioned at that time: First Presbyterian (1801) and Episcopal (1811). Princeton university began operations on September 16, 1776, with only nine students from Livingston Parish taking part in its inaugural class. Located on Purchase Street between College Avenue and Market Place within sight of then-Plymouth Meeting Station (~7 miles downstream), it was not until 1837 that the college moved westward across Route 8 from its original site to occupied Lots 10 & 11 on Center Road (now Old Bridge Road). That same year saw the opening of "The Institute", which housed both formal classes as well as informal tutorials by members of local militia groups who could not attend regular sessions due to military engagements nearby or concerns over possible British espionage activities at Yale University (). By 1860, enrollment had reached 2200 students enrolled full-time while also including 350 men/women “with some knowledge but no profession” attending evening classes each week outside normal hours thereby becoming one of first American universities open to women complete with dormitories AND fields OF study! Today's student body totals over 3800 undergraduate& graduate students from nearly 150 countries![1] In 1849–50 President James Kapp wrote a letter to his predecessor George Washington asking if he might be interested in purchasing land near Princeton for use as a presidential plantation; although Washington declined Kapp's offer Kapp did erect several facilities on this land later known collectively as "Kapp's Campus". After being offered compensation by Congress following Hurricane Betsy damage caused by a storm surge during Superstorm Sandy dated back to 1912,[2] Princeton donated $10 million towards repairs/replacement of infrastructure impacted by Sandy along with other damages throughout Hudson County NJ after flooding resulting from extreme weather conditions.[3] Over $215 million has been contributed since then making Princeton among NJ's most financially stable municipalities.[4] With investments like these ongoing Carteret Borough Mayor Dawn Zimmern stating "We need more [investments]' because we're always looking for ways we can make our community stronger', she points out how important it is for communities throughout New Jersey work together towards common goals - something that has come increasingly difficult given partisan politics nationally.[5][6][7][8][9][10]
