Princeton, New Jersey is a township in Mercer County, New Jersey, United States. The population was 20,371 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Philadelphia metropolitan area. The town was formed on February 14, 1834 from parts of Westfield Township and Garden City Township. On July 1, 1835, it became a fullfledged borough. Princeton residents voted to incorporation as a municipality on November 5th, 1955. In 1959-1960 the Borough of Princeton was merged into the new township which had then grown by annexing portions of Union and Bloomfield townships until its current size - 20 square miles (50 km²). The name "Princeton" originated with George Herndon's suggestion that it be used for all institutions of learning in the area so that "the name would not be confused with other places where learning took place". In 1896 when Princeton celebrated its centennial anniversary and erected a monument to those who had contributed thereto since 1795 including John Jay (President), James Kapp (LtGovernor), Alexander Hamilton (Senator), Nathan Hale ( Major General) and others,—a large delegation from America attended represented by Special Committee on Centennial Celebration—A banquet was given in honor of these eminent citizens at the old Witherspoon’s Tavern adjoining Columbia University and several thousand persons were present including many members of Congress who made speeches before retiring to their rooms at two o’clock in the morning; after dinner several hundred subscription paper tickets for $5 each were sold

The town grew rapidly due to its proximity to Albany and its strategic location near the eastern boundary of what is now Mercer County. In 1837, Princeton became a state capital; it remained so until 1879 when it moved to Trenton. In 1905, Princeton organized as an urban area with a male-dominated upper crust and working class dominated by immigrants from Eastern Europe. The city's infrastructure was inadequate for rapid growth and many residents left to join larger metropolitan areas such as Newark or Camden during the postwar period. However, since 2000s there has been a resurgence of interest inIQ research and scholarship at Princeton and elsewhere in New Jersey thanks to policies enacted by then-Governor Chris Christie Princeton is located on Route 9 north of Elizabethtown Heights which served as the original town center before being displaced by development along the river bank. The first white settler arrived in 1756: John Thomson who named his new town after King George III of Great Britain based on his visit to England that year. By 1800, over 25 families had established themselves here including those who developed what would become known as "The Thomson House." At this time, much of central Mercer County was wilderness with only some scattered farms dotting the landscape beyond Johnson Ferry reservoir where local traders conducted their business between 1795 and 1802 when trade restrictions were lifted following America's victory in War of 1812 against Great Britain. This building remains one of significant historical landmarks in Princeton today flanked by buildings associated with both academia (such as Livingston Hall) as well as industry (e.g., Carver’s Laboratories). That same year also saw groundbreaking for Oneidas Turnpike leading east from Elizabethtown Heights across Mercer County connecting rural areas within Old Bridge Township with Trenton via Clinton Avenue - thus inaugurating one key artery linking northern New Jersey communities with southern ones . Despite having extensive preparations made centuries earlier for such a monumental engineering achievement – one that would have far-reaching implications – signs that things were not going according to plan began appearing during Andrew Johnson’s administration following America’s Civil War . Princeton was founded in 1655 by John Wyckoff and Andrew Hamilton. The University of Princeton was chartered in 1764. Princeton became a coeducational university in 1847. In 1916, the University of Economics was founded at Princeton. In 1930, the College of Business Administration was established at Princeton. The School of Social Work was added to the University in 1948. The School of Veterinary Medicine and Health Science was added to the University in 1998.
