The first settlers to Pompton Lakes were Methodist missionaries who arrived there from Allentown, Pennsylvania in 1892. They built a log cabin and started a school for their families. Pompton Lakes has experienced rapid growth since becoming an unincorporated community – its population reached 7,400 by 2006 and grew even more rapidly during the 2010 Census to 7,822 residents – largely due to development around Interstate 95 and adjacent state highways I-95W (the George Washington Bridge Highway) and I-287 (the Delaware River Path). Development has included several thousand new housing units along with retail storesand two golf courses: one operated by PGA Tour professional Jason Day (since renamed " cartier ", after himself), as well as several high schools and colleges including Rider University– one of only two NCAA Division I universities east of Philadelphia—and Monmouth University which opened its doors in 2006 following years of planning by Mayor Robert Jaffe .

Pompton Lakes is located within the Pompton Lakes Township and is part of the Newark–Jersey City Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first European to visit Pompton Lakes was Giovanni da Verrazzano in 1524. The name "Pompton" originated from a Native American word meaning "place where there are many trees." In 1764, Nicholas-Jacques Conte purchased of land at what is now Pompton Lakes from the Abenakis tribe. It was first settled by Germans who arrived during the Revolutionary War as part of Colonel Johann Friedrich Meyrick's army. After America won independence, Meyrick sold his land to George Washington and his family in 1795. In 1815, Anthony Wayne founded the township of Warren which included parts of present-day Pompton Lakes; it was later merged into Hunterdon County. In 1835, John Smeaton built a sawmill on Mill Pond near present-day Route 906 in what is now Pompton Lakes Township; it became an important mill town and remains one of the most significant economic engines for local agriculture today. The community acquired its current name from James Auchincloss (1812-1886), one of its earliest settlers and founder of Auchincloss Paper Mills Company (now JAB Holdings Inc.), which manufactured paper products until 1966 when it switched to electronic manufacturing for all customers worldwide. According to the 2010 census, 2% of the population were foreign born residents; these individuals primarily came from China (2%, or 5 people), India (1%, or 2 people), Japan (1%, or 2 people), South Korea (1%, or 2 people) and Vietnam (1%, or 2 people). Of those residents who were foreign born, 66% were male and 33% female.
