When people started to settle in Pompton Lakes, New Jersey in the early 1800s, they had no idea what they were getting themselves into. The area was a wild and sparsely populated place, with only a few scattered pioneer families living near the small community of Pompton Lakes. One of these businesses was an optometrist business that operated out of the home of Dr. George Witherspoon from 1833-1841. The optometrist business was one of the first businesses in Pompton Lakes to be established and it quickly became one of the most successful in its genre. Dr. Witherspoon's optometry practice also played an important role in helping to develop the town that we know today as Pompton Lakes. In 1837, he purchased land east of his home at 625 Main Street for $6 per acre. This purchase helped create what is now known as Pioneer Square – a heavily commercialized area that still retains much of its rural character today. It is also where many important events took place during early Pompton Lakes history including Dr. Witherspoon's death in 1841 and when the first post office was established in 1840). Not only did Dr. Witherspoon help to shape future aspects of Pompton Lakes culture; his business also helped contribute significantly to its growth over time! The village had a total population of 1,531 when it merged into neighboring Elizabethtown on April 17th, 1912; however its population only reached 1,252 after World War I due to natural growth and annexation byElizabethtown which had a larger population then Pompton Lakes- totaling 10 times its size-. The first post office in Pompton Lakes was established on November 2nd, 1907 with Averill Cushing as its first mail carrier services were provided exclusively through stagecoaches between Elizabethtown and Morristown using horses drawn wagons called "CUSHING WAGONS." On December 12th 1907 Phebe Blythe became women's rights advocate after starting her own organization called "The National Woman's Party" which met monthly at Mrs Dodge’s grocery store corner from 7pm to 11pm during peak hours offering lectures about suffrage education for women as well as rents for dances and social events throughout town- including national Patriotic Day parades held every year at Woodlawn Cemetery across from town limits; this event also served as fundraiser for local chapter NWPG). There are still remnants today of these early days including old stagecoach tracks running through town center just north of Route 202 next to Phebe's grocery store - now used for parking lots!
