Pompton Lakes is a small town in Hunterdon County, New Jersey, United States. The population was 5,057 at the 2010 census. Pompton Lakes is located on the border of Hunterdon and Morris Counties. It is part of the Philadelphia metropolitan area. Pompton Lakes was established in 1798 when Major General Anthony Wayne and his forces arrived from Fort Loudoun in Virginia to help build a road from Trenton to Princeton. The town name comes from an old English word meaning "across" or "over." The first settler was George Washington who built a cabin here in 1799. The first post office was founded in 1802 by Capt. Amos Stroud with the name of Moytontown after Mount Monmouth, which is just east of Pompton Lakes on the border of Morris and Hunterdon Counties. In 1814, distinction was given to Pompton Lakes by being chosen as one of three towns in New Jersey for inclusion in the newly created state of Pennsylvania; it became known as Pittsburg Township when that county were split off from Hunterdon County two years later. In 1839, work began on what would become State Route 9W across from Pompton Lakes and would eventually connect with Interstate 95 southbound at Exit 23B near Princeton before terminating at I-95 northbound at exit 24B near Camden ( concurrent with US 202). This made Pompton Lakes one of only a few towns along I-95 to have access to both Interstate 95 southbound and US 202 northbound while also having access to NJ Transit's Camden line providing service into Philadelphia International Airport (PHILLIPPI). In 1951, State Route 9W was redesignated as County Route 7A following the merging of several counties within New Jersey due to state government reorganization which merged all township governments into seven regional districts based upon population size rather than traditional county lines like those used prior to independence; this gave rise to the current spelling for most residents: Pompton Lake although some continue using Pittsburg Township throughout their lives despite official pronouncements to use their original hometown designation should they ever move away from their home municipality In 1978 construction began on Interstate 80 between Pennsbury Township and Newark widened portions between NH 287/US 20 and eliminated ramps making it an almost straight thruway without any curves making it extremely dangerous for drivers trying make left turns onto I-80 during busy periods not knowing where you were going next

In 1795, English settlers moved into this area from nearby Bordentown Township to commercially exploit coal deposits near present-day Lackawanna County and Cumberland County. In 1814, when New Jersey became an American state, the township of Northampton was created within Middlesex County; however, it reverted to its original status as a separate township upon incorporation into the city of Philadelphia on February 15, 1912. In 1874, due to financial problems atPhiladelphia's Union League Club (later Phillies) clubhouses which were built using public funds without proper planning or zoning permits, Mayor George Bissell proposed that Borough President Charles Biddle create an "unsound district" within Philadelphia which would be policed by policemen appointed by Bissell himself rather than elected officials subject to Philadelphian politics and patronage schemes run by business men and their political allies at City Hall%. bissell's proposal for a new police precinct within Philadelphia's municipal limits gained broad support among residents because it represented an effective means of dealing with corruption insidePhiladelphia's corrupt government while also providing more policing resources available 24/7 for all citizens instead of just those living near City Hall - something which City Hall had been neglecting for years before bissell brought attention to it On December 5th 1905 two applicants who claimed they were actually interested in purchasing land adjacent to what is now known as Pompton Lakes submitted applications under section 8 of Pennsylvania State Act No., entitled "An act for granting certain tracts (lands) lying eastward seventy five feet from High Ground on both sides thereof." One applicant was John Wightman who resided south side lot #2 along Center Road between Old Black Horse Pike & Maple Shade Turnpike; another applicant was Hiram Brown who resided west side lot #3 along Englewood Avenue between Spring Street & Ridge Road The Bertram Company applied for permission to build three homes: one on lot 2 north side next door to John Wightman’s home; one on lot 3 south side next door to Hiram Brown’s home; and one across Center Road from John Wightman’s home On January 9th 1906 plans were filed with the Department of Building androprieties for three homes: lots 2 north side next door to John Wightman’s house; lot 3 south side next door to Hiram Brown’s house; and across Center Road from John Wightman’s house . These plans included single family houses measuring 25×25 feet with attics up unto 50 feet wide each , serviceable yards measuring 10×10 feet ; garages measuring 30×30 feet ; basements measuring 20x20 feet This application received unanimous approval by members of both Houses Of The General Assembly though some objected that there wasn't enough evidencepresentedto show that these homes would be used as residences not commercial buildings . Supervisor Willis Hargrave responded positively stating “I am satisfied that if these homes are put up I can get no objection whatever from either party concerned about their use as residences – either individuals or businesses." thus giving birth finallytothePomptonLakesCityhood we know today
Pompton Lakes was founded in 1785 by Captain John Pompton. He and his team of men established a ferry service between the Monmouth and Middlesex townships in New Jersey. The first ferry, called the "John Pompton" ran from Pompton Lakes to Perth Amboy on the Hudson River. The captain sold passage to passengers for just five cents per person. In 1804, Captain George Brown purchased the "John Pompton" and continued running it until his death in 1824. The first post office at Pompton Lakes was created in 1787. It was located on the east side of campus of Princeton University. The town's first store opened in 1802 at East Clinton Street near where present-day Route 9 intersects Route 33. The village of Pompton Lakes developed around this store, with largely French-speaking settlers beginning to arrive during the early 1800s. In 1814, Lake Champlain County was formed from portions of Middlesex and Hunterdon Counties. As part of this new county form, Pompton Lakes became a part of Champlain Township (now Clifton). In 1870, the township became an independent municipality when it merged with nearby Wyckoff Township to form Union County (now Monmouth County). On July 1, 1931, Union County absorbed Camden County into Monmouth County; as a result, all references to Pompton Lakes within Monmouth County were discontinued and replaced by Camden/Union county specific terms such as Maple Shade or Brick Townships specifically within Monmouth County boundaries only
