Pompton Lakes is a town in Middlesex County, New Jersey, United States. The population was 7,812 at the 2010 census. Pompton Lakes is located on the border of Hunterdon and Morris Counties. It is part of the Camden-Montgomery county metropolitan area. Pompton Lakes was founded by farmers in 1839. The community was first called "Beaverdam", but it changed to "Pompton Lake" after the local post office moved to the location in 1855. The name derives from Indian words meaning "place where water flows abundantly." In 1881, a canal system was built through Pompton Lakes and nearby communities to bring water from Monmouthshire River intoNJanscape Township for use by Newark residents and businesses. This brought about an increase in business and population around Pompton Lakes as people started developing new homes near clean water supplies that were accessible from anywhere in NJ. The state highway system crossed over Pompton lakeshore at Ahamakee Bridge which began construction in 1928; this structure connected township with state highways outside of town while still allowing access to town streets for traffic inside of town limits (the bridge remained until 1957). Today, Ahamakee Drive provides access to both state routes 931 and 848 within town limits as well as Routes 22nd Street (northwest-southwest) and 1st Avenue (northwest-southeast) which run east-west within ZIP code 07605. According to the United States Census Bureau, Pompton Lakes had a total area of , all land. As of the census of 2010, there were 7,812 people residing in the borough.[1] The racial makeup of Pompton Lakes Borough was 97% White; 2% African American; 0% Native American; 0% Asian/Pacific Islander; 1%from other races; 2%of whom were Hispanic or Latino;; 3%non-Hispanic whites living alone). According to2010 US Census data ethnicity breakdown for minorities are: Black: 20%; Hispanic or Latino: 33%; Other Races: 11%. As reported by borough officials themselves “Nonwhite” residents make up just 2%.

Pompton Lakes is a town in Morris County, New Jersey, United States. The population was 5,834 at the 2010 census. Pompton Lakes was established as a small farming community on the east side of Pompton Lake in 1881 and was incorporated as a town in 1912. It ceased to exist as a municipality during the 1970s when its borders were redrawn based on ZIP codes. The name "Pompton" comes from nearby Pompton Plains which are now an agricultural area. The first people to live in what is now Pompton Lakes were Native Americans who hunted game and collected plants and sea shells for trade with other tribes. In 1772, Dutch colonists began trading with Indians along the southern bank of Pompton Lake after discovering valuable resources there. By 1800, many English settlers had arrived in Morris County and started farms around Pompton Lakes. By 1881, most of the English-owned farms had been sold off to Italian immigrants who founded new villages along the lakefront including Amboy Township (now part of East Brunswick), Mount Airy Township (now part of Bridgewater), West Orange Township (now part of Woodbridge), and Bricktown Borough (now part of Parsippany). Pompton Lakes became an incorporated town on December 2, 1912 following ratification by voters ofMorris County's charter amendment that allowed towns to be created without input from residents. At its incorporation, it consisted only of a nucleus of small farmers near the lakefront; later annexations added adjacent communities such as South Brunswick, East Brunswick Heights, East Orange Township Heights, Passaic Hills Borough (now section 07-001st St., Parsippany), Dunellen Borough (now section 09-003rd St., Rahway), Paramus Borough (section 12-003rd St., Paramus), Asbury Park borough (section 14-004th Ave., Asbury Park) and Pascagoula Township (section 16-005th Ave., Pascagoula). In 1974, when Morristown township was merged into New Jersey,[2] Pomptons Lakes fell within Asbury Park's boundaries but lost all local government functions apart from police services until 2006 when they were re-established within Asbury Park proper under the administration of Mayor Joe Curtatone. On July 1st 2006 all municipal services were transferred back to Pomptons Lakes through annexation by neighboring Westwood City Council located just south/west of downtown Asbury Park[3] - this made both municipalities one city with jurisdiction over all populated areas between Morristown Avenue northward and Swedesboro Avenue eastward inclusive[4]; however much like their predecessors' lack any significant economic development outside their core urban areas has resulted in little real growth or change taking place within these municipalities since their merger - despite this latter city having officially become more populous than either prior municipality due largely to rising affluence within both Demographically speaking municipalities thanks mostly to lower costs associated with larger jurisdictions[5], while also experiencing some modest gentrification activity taking place spurred largely by increased access to quality education opportunities availablewithin present dayAsbury Park - something which appears increasingly unlikely given increasing affluence within Demographically speaking municipalities overall
Pompton Lakes was first settled in 1799 by German immigrants, who named the area "Pompton". The community was founded on the banks of the Passaic River. In 1802, a post office was established at Pompton Lakes and it continued to serve until 1892. In 1868, a railroad line was built through Pompton Lakes and the community became connected with New York City. In 1903, a second railroad line was built through Pompton Lakes and it became known as the Pennsylvania Railroad. The community developed into a large town and it now has a population of over 10,000 residents.
