The first expansion of the Pompton Lakes Historical Society was in 1984 when George Fenton opened a new museum at 9th and Market Streets. The society had been operating as a voluntary group since 1939. In 1992, the New Jersey State Council on History and Heritage approved an appropriation of $5,000 for the creation of an historical research center at Pompton Lakes. This enabled the society to purchase two buildings on the northeast side of town – one from the former Rector’s School property and the other from Mr. John A. Peca Jr.'s farmstead – which became our research library and archives annex. In 1995, we moved into our current building at 1114 Elm Street (then located across from Central Park). Our primary purpose is to collect and preserve historic materials related to Pompton Lakes, including old photographs, posters, documents and artifacts from before 1915 until today.

The area was first settled by English colonists in the early 17th century, and has since become known for its wide variety of flora and fauna. The name Pompton comes from the ancient Dutch word "paal" (a small pond), which means “pond or rivulet”. The name was anglicized to "Pompton" in the 16th century, and it retained this meaning until after World War II when it was changed to "Plainsboro". Pompton Lakes is a census-designated place (CDP) in Hunterdon County, New Jersey, United States. The population was 1,130 at the 2010 census. Pompton Lakes is located east of the city of Paterson and west of Rahway. Pompton Lakes was established as a Rural Municipality on December 12, 1887 by an act of the New Jersey Legislature. On January 3, 1905, it became a CDP when it ratified an amendment to the New Jersey Constitution which granted rights to rural municipalities without populations over 1,000. The first town in Pompton Lakes Township was opened on February 11, 1904 and incorporated as Unityville with a population of 54 residents. The township's first post office was located at 309 White Horse Road (now Route 6), which served as its mailing address until 1951. It closed on October 15, 1957 due to low mail volume and changed its name to Pompton Lakes for all purposes effective November 2 that year. On March 14th 1928, the township had a total population of 524 and annexed part of Rahway Township from Warren Township; this annexation created what is now known as the "Rahway tri-cities." This annexation caused some local resentment because it removed much agricultural land from Pompton Lakes' borders while also increasing neighborhood development around what were then small villages within Rahway Township - including present day Pompton Lakes proper - although there still exists some pre-existing acreage between those villages and Pompton Lakes CDP limits north/south and east/west (i.e., where Shawangunk Avenue crosses Route 46). In 1979, following passage of legislation authorizing township consolidation into larger Hunterdon County townships under the new county government structure, both village portions within Rahway Township were reabsorbed into Pomotton Lakes while retaining their own governing bodies; this action preserved much agricultural land north/south along Shawangunk Avenue within Pompton Lakes boundaries while also reducing neighborhood development in that area around existing villages within Rahway Township - such as present day Clarendon Heights or Spring Lake - although there does still exist some pre-existing acreage between those villages and Pompton lakes bounds north/south and east/west (i.e., where Shawangunk Avenue crosses Route 46). In 1984-1985 two additional schools were added to form Palmer Park Elementary School & Middle School before finally closing in 1991 due to financial difficulties; these schools are no longer operational today but still maintain commemorative signage inside their former campuses..
