Pompton Lakes is part of the Camden–Newark– Gladstone Township Combined Statistical Area. The area that now makes up Pompton Lakes was first settled by English settlers in 1664 as "Pontham." It was named for John Pompton, an early settler and one of the founders of Princeton University. In 1815, it became part of Middlesex Township and then Morris County. The village of Pompton Hills was founded adjacent to Pompton Lakes in 1872 by immigrants from Eastern Europe who had come to work on the Erie Canal. Pompton Lakes has been home to many professional sports teams over the years: its original team played in Division III (now NCAA Division I) football until 1919; it later joined the American Football League (AFL) as a member club from 1951 through 1957; after being expelled from that league, it rejoined again from 1968 to 1971 as a member club of the NFL’s Philadelphia Eagles; and finally, since 2002, as a member club of Major League Soccer’s New England Revolution. Today, Pompton Lakes remains an educational center with more than 100 colleges and universities located within its boundaries including Rutgers-Camden University and Seton Hall University. As well, there are several businesses and restaurants located within its borders including Jamba Juice Company and Quizno's Pizza Place
