The community was located on the Pompton River, about 12 miles south of Clifton and 10 miles north of Fair Lawn. The first settlers in Pompton Lakes were German immigrants who arrived from Lower Saxony in the 1780s. They built log cabins and raised livestock near present-day Pompton Lakes State Park. In 1824, John Cockerill donated land to the town for a public school district. The first school opened in 1825. In 1875, the Railroad Commission designated Pompton Lakes as one of five stations on its Main Line between Newark and Philadelphia. The station became an important transportation hub for commuters arriving by rail from surrounding towns and villages. By 1900, Pompton Lakes had a population of around 100 people. During World War II, many local businesses supported the war effort including production of munitions and tires at nearby Allentown Arsenal. After hostilities ended in 1945, many residents turned their attention to rebuilding their lives after wartime devastation. Many new homes were built in what is now the heart of the community; however some original buildings remain standing today including a post office (1910), library (1935), justice court (1956), swim team complex (1975), and two churches – Christ United Methodist Church (1875) and First Baptist Church (1920). A large number of refugees who had fled Nazi Germany settled in Pompton Lakes during WWII; these individuals helped create an interfaith coalition that opposed fascism throughout Europe throughout the late 1940s and early 1950s
