Pompton Lakes, NJ is a borough in Morris County, New Jersey, United States. The population was 9,898 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Philadelphia–Camden–Wilmington Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first settlers in Pompton Lakes were Dutch immigrants who arrived in 1665. They named their settlement "Hertogenbosch". In 1821, Governor James K. Polk established the Pompton Lakes Academy as a seminary for Congregationalists and Presbyterians. The school closed in 1875 but reopened as a high school in 1902. In 1863, General John J. Pershing founded the First Moravian Church of America here and served as its first pastor from 1865 to 1868. The church built its own brick church on Main Street in 1870-71 and again from 1872 to 1886-87; it remains one of Pompton Lakes' most prominent landmarks today. In 1904-05, Pompton Lakes became an incorporated municipality with a Mayor/Council form of government under the new state law that recognized municipal governments within county borders as well as townships and villages therein (the township form having been abolished earlier that decade). During World War II, Pompton Lakes was home to many American military bases including Drew Air Force Base which housed B-29s during their takeoff flights over New York City; Key West Navy Yard where PT boats were manufactured; and Naval Station Kings Bay which supported submarines operations off Long Island Sound! Pompton Lakes, New Jersey is a census-designated place (CDP) in Monmouth County, New Jersey, United States. As of the 2010 Census, the CDP had a population of 11,844. Pompton Lakes was first settled in 1795 by Dutch colonists and has been an agricultural center since its founding. The name "Pompton" comes from a Native American word meaning "to drive away." The Pompton Lakes area was first settled by Dutch colonists in 1795 as part of the larger township of Perth Amboy. The community's namesake came from early settler Johannes Pomptons who purchased land at what is now the junction of Route 22 and Old State Road 10 near today's Community College Campus. At that time, there were few roads through the indigenous Lenape Nation and transportation was difficult for settlers to find or afford. In 1812, George Washington leased 2 miles (3 km) of present-day Main Street from Nicholas Hardenberg for $5 per year with the understanding that it would be used only for market purposes and not as a road. After Hardenberg sold his interest in 1814, Washington continued to lease land until his death in 1800. By this time, much of what is now Pompton Lakes had been developed as farms by Europeans who arrived during the 1700s and 1800s including: William Bradford de la Grange (1728–1800), Nicholas Hardenberg (1729–1812), John Pemberton (1694–1768), James Robertson (died 1798), Isaac Norris(baptized 1681/2 died young) and Jacob Hechtman(born c1690). In 1837, Samuel Morse donated 8 acres (30 ha) on which he built Morse Hall which later became known as Pompton Lakes Community College. At that time – rival Rutgers University had just opened its stateside campus on Park Avenue – Pompton Lake residents believed their college would soon become competitive with facets such as Rutgers 'upper classes'. This was because they allowed individuals to carry multiple handguns without having them stored in a safe or taking up valuable space on their person. Additionally, these cases allowed people to transport their firearms easily and safely.
Pompton Lakes is a small town in Morris County, New Jersey, United States. The population was 2,123 at the 2010 census. Pompton Lakes is one of the oldest communities in Morris County and was founded by Scottish immigrants in 1802. It became a village in 1898, and then a town in 1932. It was annexed to Township of Plainsboro in 1951. The name "Pompton" comes from Scots Gaelic "pompon", meaning "a great or splendid thing." The first settler on the current site of Pompton Lakes was John Smyth who arrived there on November 15, 1802 with his family from Perthshire, Scotland. Smyth had been recruited as an indentured servant by entrepreneur George Washington Smith and began working on the farmlands near present-day Pompton Lakes on December 6 that year. Smyth's wife and three children remained behind to help husband and father start a new life. In 1803, Smith sold Smyth's land to David Irvine for $1 million dollars which made Pompton Lakes one of the most valuable townships in New Jersey at the time. Irvine built several large homes including one known as Irvine House which still stands today within the limits of Pompton Lakes Village boundaries today (although it has been extensively renovated). He also constructed many other homes throughout what is now Pompton Lakes Village including some that are still standing today such as Irvine Lodge #5 which overlooks Long Branch Harbor just south of Interstate 95 and can be seen from Route 22; Irvine House #2 located just west of Route 22; Irvine Park home number 3 (which still stands) next to Route 22 westbound exit off I-95; Asbury Inn home number 5 across Long Branch Harbor eastbound off I-95; Pemberton Mansion located just north of Interstate 95 approximately two miles east of Cherry Hill Road). Morse initially built his house called Basking Ridge but soon moved it downriver to its present location overlooking Long Branch Harbor where he spent much time during his lifetime fishing for salmon and catfish using his private dock/lake system utilizing more than twenty different types of boats both open water and pack ice based operations lasting up to twelve hours per day during summer months when access could be obtained only through special permit required by state government officials according to contemporary newspaper articles describing daysgone by back then including: “Fishing should not be attempted without proper license from State authorities” . When governor James Kents arrivedontentionable about high levels Sportfishing taking place within state limits he ordered all commercial fishing licenses revoked effective September 1st 1830 until further notice..
