Pompton Lakes was established as a town by an act of the New Jersey Legislature on February 17, 1871 (dated February 14), based on the merger of two towns, Pompton and Spring Valley. The first mayor was A.F. Beaumont and the first selectman were J.M. Quinn and Payson Waugh. The original town site included present-day Pompton Lakes and Spring Valley as well as parts of what are now Easton Township and South Orange Township (both in Middlesex County). The name "Pompton" originated from village in Suffolk England where it was used for a millstream that crossed over to Long Branch from Great Neck before emptying into Bear Swamp near today's Bound Brook Road. At one time there were several mills in and around Pompton Lakes including: John Atherton's Mills (now closed), Arendt & Bigham's Mills (now closed), Du Pont's Mills (now closed), Summerville Manufacturing Company (now defunct) and Dickson Bros.' Mill which still stands on Route 22 just east of its former location near Cherry Hill Road/Route 923 interchange between South Orange Township/Millville Borough and Union City Borough/. In 1881, when Pompton Lakes became a borough, the original boundaries were slightly enlarged to include present day Spring Valley along with all of what are now Easton Township, South Orange Township (including today’s Bound Brook Road), Maple Shade Borough across Route 924 from West Deptford Borough/, Camden Borough within Bound Brook Park township Limits northward to Creek Rd., Burlington withinBound Brook Park township Limits southward to Creek Rd., Rahway withinBound Brook Park township Limits westward to creek mouth; these borders remain largely unchanged to this day although some land has been annexed by other municipalities since then such as Oakleigh Village located east of current bounds for lack of space within Bound Brook Park municipality limits or Willow Grove located west side boundary for similar reasons

Pompton Lakes was first settled in the early 17th century by Dutch farmers. The area became a part of the British empire after the American Revolution. In 1814, Pompton Lakes was incorporated as a township. It was again renamed in 1881 as Pompton Lakes Township, after its founder, Salmon P. Chase. The township seat was located at Griggsville until 1951 when it moved to West Allis.
