Pompton Lakes, New Jersey is a borough in Camden County, New Jersey, United States. As of the 2010 United States Census, the borough had a population of 27,971. Pompton Lakes was incorporated as a borough on April 14, 1892. The name "Pompton" comes from two villages in Ontario County—Pomptown and Pompton Plains—and refers to both the village's location and its role as an agricultural center during the early 1800s. The present-day Borough of Pompton Lakes was created from portions of West Camden Township on November 3, 1911. The first residents of Pompton Lakes arrived in 1795 when John Beers built his sawmill at what is now known as Beers Corners on the banks of the Hackensack River. By 1800, several mills had been founded in this area including ones owned by Nicholas De Witte and Jacob Riis. In 1815 Joshua Strong established a tannery at what is now called Point Pleasant Avenue and soon became one of NJ's leading leather producers. From 1840 until 1860 there were six schools located in or near Pompton Lakes: three elementary school buildings (one burned down), one high school building (now known as Greenbelt High School), and two academies (now known as Northumberland Academy). By 1870 only two small farms were still extant within the boundaries of today's Borough; these were along State Road 12 between Ridgefield Park and West Milford. In 1892 Pompton Lakes was incorporated into Camden County following passage by then-Governor Averill Harriman of an act authorizing incorporation for unincorporated areas within Camden County which did not have their own government yet due to lack thereof after section 8th Amendment municipalization efforts failed earlier that year. The Borough quickly grew due to its proximity to both City Hall in Newark and various textile factories located throughout southern New Jersey which contributed heavily to its growth during this time period. When Farmingdale Township was formed east of Trenton on March 15th 1897 it included most if not all of what is now Pomaton Lakes with only a few acres remaining along Dogpatch Creek northward towards Ridgefield Park while other lands lay southward undeveloped within Farmingdale Township limits becoming part Of South Norriton Township on January 1st 1898 also creating much future development throughout that area outside current borders around Ridgefield Park including some land currently belonging to Bloomfield Hills outside township lines

In 1859, a Springfield Armory gun slings company was started in the city of Springfield, Massachusetts. The founders were George P. Magruder and Amos Kendall. The first gun sling made was made from a piece of leather that had been cut to size and then sewn together with straps around it. This became known as the "Kendall Gun Slings." The gun slings continued to be designed by Mr. Magruder until 1861 when he resigned due to his health problems. His son, George W. Magruder took over the company and continued making the products until 1865 when he also resigned due to health reasons. In 1865, General John Jervis ordered all arsenals in America to stop manufacturing guns because of the American Civil War being fought nearby. This caused many businesses in Springfield to close their doors however, George W. Magruder's father still ran the business until 1868 when he died at age 82 years old..
Pompton Lakes, New Jersey is a small town located in Bergen County, New Jersey. The town was founded in 1879 by Samuel Pompton and his wife Esther. The Pomptons were the first residents of the township. The present day Pompton Lakes was formed from a merger of two townships: Haddon Township and Westwood Township. The Pompton Lakes post office opened on July 1, 1881. It served as the ZIP code for all of Bergen County untilonne became zip code 07001 in 1987. The population of Pompton Lakes at the 2010 census was 6,521. As of 2016, there are still no schools within the town limits with only one high school that serves students from kindergarten through eighth grade and one middle school that does not offer any grades 9-12 classes. The township has two churches; First Presbyterian and St John's Lutheran Church both founded in 1882. Both churches remain active today and are both part of the Moravian Community Church chain which also includes Bethlehem Steel Plant and Montvale Mall. There are also several businesses located within the boundaries of the township including a few grocery stores (Grocery Outlet), a few employment agencies (Jobs Unlimited NJ), a few hair salons (Hair salon By appointment only!), three gas stations - one being an ExxonMobil station - six pizzerias - four Chinese restaurants - two bars - one record store - three convenience stores (Bob's Notion Bakery & Coffee Store, J'Lo's Pizza Place & Donuts Plus) as well as several homes or other buildings used for various purposes such as storage orttes or garages etc... All these businesses have been closed down over time but some have reopened again like Bob's Notion Bakery & Coffee Store which is now open 24/7! "Pompton Lakes" originally spelled "Pontefract". On February 15th 1775 Joseph Hooker received Patent to sell land at what is now known as Pompton Lakes Township . This patent may be confusing because it covers land east of Hackensack River where Rahway now stands while much later patents cover more territory including what is now called eastern Bergen County
Pompton Lakes was founded in 1848 by George and Martha Pompton. It was named for the Pompton River that flows through the town. The Pomptons were early settlers in the area and built their first home on a hill overlooking the river. In 1870, they added a second home and began to cultivate land around their homes. The town's growth continued until the late 1800s when transportation became available to more people and production of goods decreased.
