When the American Revolution started, many people in America were inspired to fight for independence from Great Britain. Some of these fighters decided to take arms with local militias and start a new government. Others took up arms with the British army. In Pompton Lakes, New Jersey, one such person was John Gunn who decided to join the British army in 1775. He became a sergeant and fought in the Battles of Saratoga and Yorktown. After the war, Gunn continued to serve in the British army until 1783 when he resigned due to health issues. At this time, there was not yet a United States of America and Gunn may have been one of its first gunners! In 1876, two brothers named John and James McGowan bought land in Pompton Lakes and began building a farmhouse known as The McGowan House. This house is still standing today and is used as a museum today. The McGowan family were very interested in firearms and started keeping pistols on their property starting in 1879. This was an early example of firearm ownership within reach of most Americans! The McGowan House also served as home to two other families which are documented through oral history: The Weedons lived next door from 1951-1963 while The Postells occupied another house down the street from 1978-1986; both families left behind fascinating stories about their lives at The McGowan House during those years! In 1912, Pouter Township annexed Pompton Lakes into its jurisdiction making it easier for businesses to be located within its boundaries. This meant that gun stores could now be established throughout town! As business flourished within Pompton Lakes over the years, so too did its gun industry! By 1945, there were more than 20 gun shops located throughout town! Gun manufacturers such as Colt & Co., Winchester Repeating Arms Company (Winchester), Remington Arms Company (Remington) all had factories located hereabouts during this time period! It can be said that Pompton Lakes was home to one of America’s most prosperous pistol manufacturing industries!!

There are a few references to gun pouches in Pompton Lakes, New Jersey. In 1868, the first store in Pompton Lakes was opened by W.T. Hutton and his wife Fannie. Mr. Hutton sold rifles and shotguns, ammunition, and other items from his business premises. In 1871, the village of Pompton Lakes had a population of 22 residents and two stores; one operated by Wm. Fenton and the other by James Caird (the brother-in-law of Phebe Ackerman). The first gun pouch company in Pompton Lakes was organized on April 14th 1870 by Ira Warner & Alfred Peck with four pistols each for sale at $3 per month; these were soon joined by Jno. D’Angelo with ten revolvers (these were originally “pocket pistols”) for sale at $4 per month each plus fifty cents for every six guns sold. In early 1871, John Acker published an article entitled “A Pocket Pistol For Every Man” which described how to make your own pistol grip holster from a piece of leather or webbing that is 1/2 inch wide x 3/8 inch deep x 2 inches wide (this is now known as the "Pompton Lakes Rifle Holster"). This type of holster could be made using any sturdy piece of fabric such as cotton twill or canvas long enough to fit over the revolver's barrel followed by a belt loop or strap around the waistline (the width should be slightly wider than the revolver's barrel). It was not until 1886 that an actual firearm holster design appeared in issue #27 of The National Rifleman magazine which was entitled "How To Make A Gun Pouch - A Simple Way To Hold Your Weapon". This design consisted of two straps crossing behind the revolver's barrel just above its muzzle where it rested on top of your clothing so that it would not move while you fired; one strap ran lengthwise along either side of the weapon while another ran parallel across its back along the front edge near your hip bone (this became known as a "Hook And Loop" holster). The key difference between this type of holster and later designs was that this particular style did not include any means to hold down your fire button; you simply relied on gravity to keep your revolver pointed towards your target rather than needing to hold down anything else! In 1881, Elisha Goodrich opened a general store adjacent to John Acker's shop serving both retail customers and police officers who requisitioned firearms from Goodrich's store after raids conducted against saloons operating within 100 feet Of Public Streets in order to quench public thirst for alcohol prohibitionism! At some point after 1889 Goodrich closed his store permanently due to economic difficulties although he still provides sales assistance services today through his company Elisha Goodrich Firearms Sales Incorporated! By 1898 there were three gun shops located within sight or reachof most citizens in Pompton Lakes - John Acker's shop next door which served law enforcement officials as well as civilians nearby; Elisha Goodrich Firearms Sales Incorporated next door which served only military personnel stationed within 100 feet Of Public Streets; andGoodrich's Store itself located several hundred yards distant
Pompton Lakes is a town in Hunterdon County, New Jersey, United States. The population was 10,442 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Paterson– Passaic– Glassboro Metropolitan Statistical Area. Pompton Lakes is bordered by the towns of Haddonfield and Parsippany to the east, East Brunswick to the south, and Northumberland Township to the west. The town was founded in 1812 by John Pompton and his family as West Newton; it was renamed Pompton Lakes in 1869 after John Pomeroy Pompton Jr., a trustee of Hamilton College who also served as President of Rutgers University from 1893-1896. In 1907, Pompton Lakes became an incorporated city and remains so today. According to the United States Census Bureau, Pompton Lakes has a total area of , all of it land. As of the census[10] of 2000, there were 9,471 people, 3,719 households, and 2,834 families residing in the township. The population density was 1,906 persons per square mile (688/km²). There were 4wd3 households outof which 34% had children underthe ageof 18 living with them,[11] 60% were married couples living together,[12] and 24% were non-families. 20%of all households were made up Of individualsand 8% had someone living alone who was 65 years old or older. Pompton Lakes, New Jersey is a small town located in Union County, New Jersey on the border of Camden and Middlesex counties. The population was 7,512 at the 2010 census. Pompton Lakes is one of five villages in Union County that are part of the Pompton Lakes School District. The first settlers in Pompton Lakes were families from Connecticut who arrived in 1684. They built a cabin on the now-demolished Bankers Brook Dam property which they named "Pompton". The first post office was established in 1788 and was called "Newburgh". In 1819, the community name was changed to "Pompton Lakes" after General James Oglethorpe, who had helped lead American forces during the War for Independence. In 1857, brick ovens were erected in Pompton Lakes by George Aiken and others to produce bricks for construction projects around Newark and other towns in New Jersey. Brick production resumed following World War II and has continued through the present day. In 1967, when Interstate 95 was completed bypassing Camden tothe south, Pompton Lakes became an interchange point between I-95 and NJ Transit's Raritan Line with access from both directions. Today, Pompton Lakes remains a small town with a strong sense of community spirit that continues to thrive despite its large population size relative to most municipalities within Union County. This cooperative spirit can be seen throughout the town - from its elected officials to its businesses and citizens themselves - all working together towards common goals such as providing affordable housing opportunities or supporting local events like tradeshows or music festivals.
