The original settlers were Dutch farmers who came overland from New Netherland in search of new land to farm. They named their community after a smallreek that they located near their farmstead on the banks of the Susquehanna River. In 1800, John Dickinson formed a town on sections of what is now Pompton Lakes Road and Plank Road, west of present-day Cherry Hill Township. This town became known as Dickinson because its founder donated all his acreage for development and it remained Unincorporated until 1892 when it received township status under Pennsylvania law. In 1894, both townships were combined into one municipality, and today continue to be divided among both municipalities as needed for local purposes. Pompton Lakes began to grow rapidly during World War II due to munitions production and shipbuilding activity at nearby Shipyards No 1 & 2 on Monmouth Peninsula (now called Edison). With so many people living close by, schools were built in 1943 and 1944 to serve these residents with playgrounds, swimming pools, tennis courts, hockey rinks and other activities necessary for keeping children active during wartime times while they awaited news of family members or friends back home. These school districts are still in use today but have been replaced by larger public schools that serve more areas closer to homes rather than having such an intimate relationship with individual families like those days past. Today’s economy is based principally on tertiary education which has led to increased job opportunities within the region since 2000 across health care services (e example; MRI scanners), engineering including manufacturing (pumps), information technology (web design) as well as retail sales including restaurants and convenience stores outside of city limits with no loss in tax revenue generated from these businesses within city limits alone!
Pompton Lakes was first settled in 1799. The community name derives from the Pompton River which flows through the town. The Pompton Lakes Post Office was established in 1836, and continued to serve until 1914. In 1848, John A. Macdonald donated land to the town for a school and railroad station. The original tracks were built by the New Jersey Central Railroad. The Pompton Lakes School was opened in 1868 and served students from boroughs along the NJ Central Railroad until 1954 when it merged into Hunterdon County School District No. 2. In 1916, the town erected a water tower to celebrate its incorporation as a municipality. On December 3, 1926, work began on constructing an expressway through the town which became known as the "Johnson Expressway". In 1940, changes were made to thetown charter which allowed for more voting rights for women and increased funding for schools. In 1951, work began on enlarging ofthe expressway which became known as I-95/I-280.
