Pompton Lakes is a town in Middlesex County, New Jersey, United States. The population was 11,693 at the 2010 census. Pompton Lakes is part of the New York City metropolitan area. The town was named for General John Jacob Pompton who served as a brigadier general in the American Revolution and helped found Trenton Township. The Pompton Lakes Bridge over the Susquehanna River connects Pompton Lakes with nearby Whitehouse Station. It was built in 1911 by George Sutherlin and Thaddeus Stevens as a crossing point for wagon trains heading to Philadelphia from points east. The bridge has been replaced three times since then and remains one of only two remaining original bridges in Middlesex County. The first settlement in what would become Pompton Lakes occurred around 1795 when British troops burned down an old Native American trading post near present-day Westwood Road and Long Branch Avenue. This prompted Major James Purdie to settlements around what are now Verona Park, Westwood Village, Long Branch and East Meadow Roads. Purdie's settlers were primarily Quakers but also included some farmers and traders from Pennsylvania, Maryland and Delaware. By 1800, most of this community had coalesced into two groups: the Dutch Reformed Church (now known as Christoval Baptist Church) on Long Branch Road west of present-day Main Street; and English Protestants called "Pomptons" (later "Pompton") on its eastern border between Verona Park Road (now Huntingdon Avenue) and Deerfield Road nearpresent-day Whitehouse Station
