The name "Pompton" originated with General George Washington's use of it during his visits to Trenton in 1794 and 1795. In 1915, Pompton Lakes became a U.S. Naval Air Station when it was dedicated by Admiral Chester Nimitz withSNF-4A "Cubs" being flown from nearby Willow Grove Army Airfield (now Wright-Patterson AFB). The station closed its doors on 5 May 1946 following World War II; however, nuclear testing continued at NAS Cherry Hill until 1963 when they were relocated to Plutonium Disposition Facility #2 adjacent to Rocky Flats National Laboratory near Aberdeen Proving Ground Maryland - continuing this legacy until 1998! The population of Pompton Lakes was 3,811 at the 2010 census. Pompton Lakes is located on the border of Monmouth and Ocean Counties. The first person to live in Pompton Lakes was Nicholas Brady who settled there with his family in 1781. He built a cabin on what is now Route 9A near today's Deer Park Road. In 1849, when the Township of Monmouth merged with Middlesex County, Brady donated land to create what is now Pompton Lakes CDP. The village that developed around Brady's cabin became one of the most important areas in southeastern New Jersey for agriculture and industry during the 19th century; it became an agricultural center due to its fertile soil and good water supplies. The area around Pompton Lakes experienced significant growth from 1849 through 1870 when many farmers moved there from rural parts of Middlesex and Atlantic Counties because of new transportation opportunities brought about by railroads such as the Delaware and Hudson Railroad (D&H). By 1870, Pompton Lakes had become an important manufacturing center for cotton textiles and cigars; it also manufactured shoes, boots, hats and other items used by workers on nearby farms. In 1907, after years of debate between local villagers and developers over how best to use part of their former farmland for development purposes – including housing developments – Pompton Lakes incorporated as a municipality under the name "Pompton Lakes". During World War II many factories were located along Interstate 95 near present-day Uniondale; however only two are still operating: Hormel Foods Company’s Morristown plant which produces hot dogs while Ford Motor Company’s car manufacturing operations are located at Dearborn Assembly Plant which manufactures Ford models including convertibles and station wagons
