Pompton Lakes is a small town in Middlesex County, New Jersey, United States. The population was 8,811 at the 2010 census. Pompton Lakes is part of the Newark–Jersey City Metropolitan Statistical Area. It lies on the east bank of the Passaic River and is bordered to the south by Ramsey Township and to the west by Woodbridge Township. The first Europeans to visit Pompton Lakes were Dutch settlers in 1664. English colonists arrived in 1716 and began trading with Native Americans. On November 12, 1764, George Washington's troops burned down what is now known as York Hall (now called Old Bridge), located near present-day Pompton Lakes Elementary School, after a battle with British forces under General John Burgoyne. The settlement was given its name from Captain Philip Pomfret who surveyed it in 1768 while commandeering an army retreat from Fort Stanwix on Long Branch Island across the Passaic River. In 1814, Samuel Morse built his first telegraph line between Hackensack and Trenton using telespont cable technology – this was one of the earliest public demonstrations of electrical cable transportation in North America. In 1876, Edison established a electric power plant here that became one of North America's leading producers of electricity. In 1928, Pompton Lakes became home to New Jersey's first cinema when Pathé opened its doors at Seventh Avenue and Market Street; this movie theater still stands today as part of the PATH system train station complex adjacent to Interstate 95/I-95E). The community experienced another boom during World War II with many businesses contributing their resources towards manufacturing for military production; these days about 60% of all jobs are within hi-tech industries such as information technology and pharmaceuticals according to NJ Monthly Magazine’s “A Profile: Newark” (2006). After World War II ended there were several waves of Hispanic immigrants who came looking for work opportunities; they have since become majorities in both black and white communities across Northeast Corridor counties including Essex County which has seen some high levels ofimmigration over recent decades (see "Latino Americanos" section below). Pompton Lakes was formed on May 15, 1879 from the merger of two small villages: Hampton and Pompton Plains. The original town name may have been "Pompton Heights." The first settlers in Pompton Lakes were farmers who arrived during the early 1800s. They grew corn and potatoes until the mid-19th century when a new railroad came through and began to ship wheat to New York City. By 1865, all farming had ceased in Pompton Lakes because of the railroad's arrival. In 1879, two small villages merged to form a new borough: Hampton and Pompton Plains. The new town name may have been based on one of these villages’ original names (e.g., Hampton or Plainfield). However, there is no definitive proof that this was true; it is possible that either village chose its current name based on their location within the new borough or they simply agreed upon it as a result of common interests (such as close proximity to larger towns). The rise of transportation allowed for more people to move into Pompton Lakes after its incorporation date – which helped contribute to its growth over time. Today, many commuters use the nearby Routes 904 and 202 highways interchangeably when traveling between Passaic County and Newark Liberty International Airport (Newark NJ). During World War II, many local businesses made contributions to wartime efforts by manufacturing military uniforms or other items needed by soldiers stationed in our area. Some examples include Donahue's Clothing & More located across from Midtown Mall in downtown Pompton Lakes; Electricians Union No.(9) located on Main Street near Turnpike exit #4B; American Can Manufacturing located at 6 Maple St.; local businessman George Auerbach donated $2 million towards Ford Motor Company’s assistance with Nazi Germany; among others (*), all of which are now preserved inside Midtown mall today where you can find them today!
