Pompton Lakes is a town in Hunterdon County, New Jersey, United States. The population was 7,898 at the 2010 census. Pompton Lakes was first settled in 1784 by Loyalists from Nova Scotia. It became part of Hunterdon County on February 14, 1837. The community was named after John Pompton who resided in nearby Ballston Spa. The Township of Pompton Lakes was established on March 15, 1846 by commissioners from the townships of Union and Monroe (now part of Hackettstown). The township's name originated with the fact that it included all or most of what is now the village of Pompton Plains located within Union Township. On December 10, 1951, the township portion of Pompton Lakes were combined with both Union and Monroe to form the new municipality of George Washington Borough. On January 1, 1955, the borough portion of George Washington Borough was again divided into two townships: Addison and Clinton which retained their respective names while portions were merged into Pompton Lakes to form one entity - finally becoming a municipality on July 1, 1955 under then-Governor Tom Kean's administration. Pompton Lakes is located in eastern Hunterdon County at (40.923611,-74.039046). According to the United States Census Bureau, the town has a total area of , all land. As of the census[10]of 2010,[11] there were 7,898 people residing in town; 5% were non-white residents and 95% whiteaucasian residents over 21 years old according to race alone (excluding those living below poverty line).[12] Hispanic or Latino residents made up 2%. There are no differences between races when broken down by household income levels as reported on file; however those making more than $75K had a higher percentage than those earning less than $25K regardless Race alone.[13] As regards ethnicity specific ancestries%, only Irish ancestry was observed among White persons living in town while Black Americans make up 9% or so and Native American/Alaska natives make up 1%. In terms of religious affiliation%, Roman Catholics constituted 24% (vs 20% for Protestants) while Seventh-day Adventists make up 2% or so (.7 million adherents) outpatients counted as "no religion" represent 6%. Overall identified religions are Protestant 33%, Catholic 25%, Orthodox 27%, Jewish 11%, Buddhist 3%.

The name evolved to Pompton Lakes after a man named John Pompton settled there in 1762. In 1812, the town passed into English hands and became part of Middlesex County. It remained an agricultural community until the early 21st century, when heavily tech-industry-based businesses began to take hold. As a result, many of Pompton Lakes' original industries have been abandoned or lost their significance, including the now defunct Pompton Lakes Paper Company.
