Pompton Lakes was a small town in Morris County, New Jersey, United States, until it became part of the City of Newark on February 15, 2009. Pompton Lakes is located just east of the Passaic River and north of Hackensack. The Pompton Lakes ZIP code is 07003. The village was established in 1892 by George White and his brother-in-law James Fenton as a result of the construction of the Erie Railroad through Morristown. The name Pompton comes from Mount Hope Township in York County where white residents had been gathering for religious services since 1795. In 1905, Pompton Lakes incorporated as a borough and changed its name to Pompton Lakes Borough on July 1, 1907 following the merging of four other municipalities in Morris County: Bridgewater (1890), Bordentown (1896), Chesterfield (1901) and Fair Lawn (1907). On October 26, 1912, Pompton Lakes annexd neighboring Highland Park which at that time also included West Orange. In 1916, when Fair Lawn merged with Livingston to form Essex County, Pompton Lakes retained its borough status but lost its independent school board membership which it regained two years later when Livingston merged into Essex County. On January 3, 1949, after township boundaries were changed due to population growth within Morris Township and South Brunswick Township adjacent to Pompton Lakes Village proper - along with Haddon Heights - the township formed anew under Act 95 of the New Jersey Legislature as part of an overall reorganization triggered by declining public support for local government Formation within Middlesex County resulting from rapid suburban growth across central NJ during the late 1940s and early 1950s. As part of this overall reorganization process - which led to various changes throughout Middlesex County including Rahway being annexed into Union City on May 9th 1959 while Wantagh Became Monmouth Junction effective July 1st 1960 - parcels adjoining what would become Pompton Lakes were combined with those adjacent to South Brunswick Township forming what would become North Bergen Township on April 14th 1961 while East Rutherford became Paterson on November 5th 1961 following their annexation into Mercer County effective December 3rd 1960.
