Pompton Lakes, New Jersey is a small town located in Bergen County, New Jersey. The population was 2,459 at the 2010 census. Pompton Lakes was founded in 1881 by Jacob and Eliza Pompton. It is named after John Pompton, one of the first settlers in Bergen County. The Pomptons were early settlers in what is now Pompton Lakes. They purchased land from the Lenape Indians and built a small house on what is now North Avenue. In 1881, Jacob Pompton organized a farmers’ meeting to discuss how to improve their farmstead. This led to the founding of the Town of Pompton Lakes as an administrative unit within Bergen County. The first mayor was Jno Haggerty (1882-83). In 1898, the Township of Pompton Lakes merged with the Borough of Ramsey to form the Township of Ramsey-Pompton Lakes. In 1923, it merged again with Rockland Township to become Rockland-Pompton Lakes Township. As part of this merger, Lemuel Shantz became manager of both townships and served until his retirement in 1951 According to the 2000 United States Census there were 2,464 people living in Pomnton Lakes who identified themselves as “native American Indian” or “Algonquian Indian” according to Census data As of 2019 there are still over 350 people who identify themselves as Algonquian Indian living within township boundaries
